MARIGOT:--- French Senator Annick Petrus has broken her silence following a violent armed home invasion that occurred during the night of Tuesday into Wednesday, assuring the public that she is safe despite the traumatic ordeal.
In a public statement issued on Wednesday, Senator Petrus described the terrifying events that unfolded inside her home.
"I want to speak out after the assault I suffered in my home. Tonight, gunmen broke into my house. At gunpoint, I was seized, tied and gagged. I've lived moments marked by uncertainty.
"By the grace of God, I'm today safe and sound. If this ordeal can be profoundly marked, my state of health is fortunately reassuring.
"I would like to express my sincerest thanks to the law enforcement, the National Gendarmerie, and all the people who have shown their support and solidarity. An investigation is currently underway.
"This aggression will not challenge my commitment to the service of Saint-Martin and its inhabitants.
"I thank each and every one of you for your thoughts, prayers, and support."
The senator's statement confirms that armed assailants forced their way into her residence during the night of Tuesday, where they held her at gunpoint before tying and gagging her. Although visibly shaken by the incident, Petrus emphasized that she escaped without serious physical injuries and remains committed to carrying out her duties on behalf of the people of Saint-Martin.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Basse-Terre. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack or whether any arrests have been made. The violent assault has sent shockwaves throughout Saint-Martin, with an outpouring of support from residents, public officials, and colleagues following the senator's ordeal.
