Two Injured in Early-Morning Welfare Road Shooting; Suspects Escape to French Side

shootingfillin11102012COLE BAY:---  Two people were injured in an early-morning shooting on Tuesday, April 21, prompting an active investigation by the Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM).

According to police, the incident occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m. on Welfare Road near a popular 24-hour restaurant. Central Dispatch received several emergency calls reporting gunfire in the area.

When officers and ambulance personnel arrived, they found a female visitor suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower extremities. She was treated at the scene before being transported to Sint Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment.

While responding to the shooting, patrol officers reportedly spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident. A police pursuit was launched, but the suspect vehicle managed to flee and crossed into the French side through the Belle Vue area.

Authorities said efforts are continuing to identify the vehicle and locate its occupants.

Later the same morning, a second victim arrived at Sint Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to the lower body. Police said the individual’s condition was still being assessed.

Detectives are now gathering surveillance footage, digital evidence, and witness statements as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

KPSM has appealed to members of the public who may have seen what happened or who have information relevant to the case to come forward and assist investigators.

Further details are expected as the investigation develops.
