PHILIPSBURG:--- N.O.W. Member of Parliament Lyndon Lewis is deeply concerned about the alarming rise in criminal activity on the island, following reports of a robbery at Divi Little Bay Beach Resort, one of Sint Maarten’s most renowned tourist destinations that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.
MP Lewis stated that such incidents not only threaten the safety and well-being of residents and visitors but also put Sint Maarten’s reputation and economic stability at serious risk.
“Our country’s image as a safe and welcoming destination is under attack,” MP Lewis said. “Divi Little Bay is a landmark resort where visitors come to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our island. A robbery at such an establishment is not only a direct attack on those affected but also a blow to the hard work our ancestors put into building the fabric of this nation. We must act now before crime erodes the very foundation they sacrificed to create.”
MP Lewis urges the Minister of Justice to take immediate, decisive action to restore law and order to ensure safety across the island. “The time has come to press down and do whatever it takes to address this matter” he emphasized.
As part of the solution, MP Lewis suggests that the Minister of Justice explore the implementation of a dedicated Tourism Safety Task Force, working in close collaboration with the St. Maarten Police Force, private security firms, and the hospitality sector. This task force would:
- Increase patrols in tourist hotspots, including resorts, beaches, and entertainment districts.
- Establish stronger surveillance measures with the use of cameras and other modern technology.
- Provide rapid response units trained to handle incidents in areas with high tourist traffic.
- Build public-private partnerships to ensure that the tourism sector is actively engaged in protecting visitors.
“Our people and our visitors must feel safe on Sint Maarten. Without safety and security, we cannot protect our economy, our livelihoods, or the heritage of our ancestors. I call on the Minister of Justice to act swiftly and aggressively to restore confidence and bring peace of mind to all,” MP Lewis concluded.
