USM to Host Groundbreaking Symposium on the Creative Economy.

PHILIPSBURG:---  The University of St. Martin (USM) will host a landmark Orange Economy Symposium aimed at unlocking the full potential of the creative industries as engines of economic growth, sustainability, and cultural resilience in the Caribbean. The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, June 7th, 2025, at the USM campus. This event will bring together local, regional, and international thought leaders, artists, educators, policymakers, creatives, and entrepreneurs to explore the screen and creative industries’ role in advancing economic diversification across Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

This timely symposium is part of USM’s broader agenda to position the university as a catalyst for innovation and relevance in 21st-century education. It reflects a deliberate effort to build local and regional capacity in the creative sector through targeted training, curriculum innovation, and public-private partnerships. As the Caribbean navigates the complex challenges of economic vulnerability, climate change, and youth unemployment, the creative economy offers a dynamic, underutilized pathway to inclusive growth and innovation.

Key sessions will explore themes such as storytelling for climate justice, film as a tool for social and economic transformation, education and skills for the creative economy, and building a screen industries ecosystem in Sint Maarten.

"The creative and screen industries are not just about entertainment, they are about empowerment, education, identity, and economic opportunity. This symposium signals our intention to mainstream the creative sector as a serious pillar of national development," said Dr. Gale T.C. Rigobert, Dean of Academics at USM.

USM reaffirms its commitment to positioning the creative sector not only as a cultural force but as a vital driver of sustainable development in Sint Maarten and the wider Caribbean.
