Outgoing WITU President Stuart Johnson Reflects on over Two Years of Achievements.

stuartjohnson09012023PHILIPSBURG:--- Stuart Johnson, outgoing President of the Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU), reflects on his tenure with pride and gratitude, highlighting the union's remarkable achievements over the past two years.

"It was with a lot of prayer and reflection is why I did not seek a re-election of the presidency as I embrace a career change," Johnson stated.

Under his leadership, the WITU organized memorable events such as the Teacher Appreciation Boat Cruise, the distribution of Christmas vouchers, training sessions on Collective Bargaining, and vibrant celebrations for International Women's Day and International Men's Day. Initiatives like the Teacher Appreciation Happy Hour and the creation of membership pins strengthened the bond among union members and showcased unity and pride within the organization.

The recent launch of membership cards marked a significant milestone in enhancing service delivery to WITU members, providing tangible benefits, and elevating the union's level of service.

Johnson remains elated, that staff of the Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) joined the WITU membership.

Johnson also gave a presentation at the University of St. Martin (USM) each semester for the Foundation of Education Course as part of the Elementary Education Degree program.

Regionally, the WITU achieved unprecedented success, securing a record number of representatives on Caribbean Union of Teachers committees and assuming the historic role of 3rd Vice President by Johnson. The union's international presence was felt at the ILO International Conference 2022 virtually and in person for 2023, where President Johnson passionately defended Convention 87, advocating for the rights of employees in St. Maarten.

Johnson ensured for business travel to provide the membership with a travel work report which was not the norm prior to his presidency.

President Johnson's tenure was marked by proactive engagement in addressing educational concerns, including influencing management changes at St. Maarten Academy PSVE, conducting presentations, and providing valuable feedback on education policies such as the special education policy. The WITU's monitoring efforts ensured the resolution of issues at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Primary School and Oranje Primary, underscoring the union's commitment to its members.

Negotiations for improved benefits, including a vacation allowance increase and addressing salary indexing, demonstrate the WITU's commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members and ensuring their financial security.

Reflecting on his term, President Johnson expressed pride in the union's strengthened communication, transparency, and partnerships with the signed Memorandum of Understandings (MOU). The MOUs signed were with various unions in Curacao and Anguilla attributing to the success and confidence of the board and union members. He expressed confidence in the union's future and thanked members for their unwavering support and dedication.

Johnson remarked about the Committee for Civil Servants Unions (CCSU), "The pivotal role WITU played in the CCSU speaks volumes, especially for Justice and Education workers."

As Johnson concludes his tenure as President of the WITU, he leaves behind a legacy of achievement and looks forward to the continued progress and success of the union under new leadership.

"I would like to thank all WITU members for your confidence and the media for ensuring our voice got heard," Johnson concluded.
