Saturday, December 3rd, is the ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The SBC, which is the department of the WYCCF that specializes in several forms of disability care, is committed to spreading awareness about the topic to Sint Maarten by organizing several activities with and for their clients and stakeholders.

In the symposium tonight, we will go in-depth about the different behaviors and syndromes of persons with disabilities. We have as our special keynote speaker Dr. Michiel Vermaak, a specialist in disabled care. The event starts at 5:30 PM and will be held at the St. Martin’s Home at St. John’s Estate Road #6, Cul-de-Sac. A few seats are still available, so if you wish to attend this event, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Tomorrow, the Sister Basilia Center will transform into a complete Christmas Market. This event, which will be open to the general public, will start at 5 PM and will have entertainment by local artists, great raffle prizes, and delicious food and drinks for sale by local vendors. The WYCCF invites everyone to come by and enjoy the evening and to raise awareness for persons with a disability together.

People with disabilities (one billion people) are among the most excluded groups in society and are among the hardest hit in times of crisis. This is perhaps even more relevant on St. Maarten, where the topic is at times ignored, and the facilities and services for persons with disabilities are insufficient. Such as the lack of a social workplace, physical access to public transportation and buildings, and equal opportunities for education, work, and sports. This is unfortunate, as everyone deserves to participate fully in all aspects of life. Persons with disabilities have unique qualities and have a valuable role to play in our society.
As with most stigmatized issues, the root lies in a lack of knowledge about disabilities themselves, but also their prevalence. Did you know that an estimated 46% of persons aged 60 years and over have disabilities? And that one in every five women is likely to experience disability at some point in her life while one in every ten children has a disability?
Want to learn more about disabilities and support a great cause? Then both events are great opportunities to do so. We hope to see you tonight and tomorrow at the WYCCF.
