The Dutch government invests in the safety in Curaçao.

WILLEMSTAD:--- Curaçao and the Netherlands yesterday agreed on a 3rd corona support package for the island, in exchange for reforms. In that context, the Netherlands will invest extra in the security and rule of law of Curaçao in the coming years.

The Dutch government is prepared to make a total structural investment of up to € 18.5 million. According to the government, a functioning constitutional state is a precondition for economic development and the legitimate use of public finances.

The Netherlands will help Curaçao to strengthen border control. In this way, the cross-border organized crime must be prevented. Both parties are still discussing exactly what the support will look like.

The Netherlands is in any case prepared to provide more personnel from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and Customs. The Caribbean Coast Guard will also be reinforced.

Professionalization CURMIL
The defense also helps with the professionalization of the Curaçao militia (CURMIL). For example, the conscription ordinance from 1961 is heavily outdated. The CURMIL is to be developed into an infantry unit that contributes better to the main tasks of Defense. The focus is on supporting the civil authorities.

Money will also go to the Social Training Program. In this way, Defense offers young people the opportunity to rehabilitate. This is done with the cooperation of Curaçao.

Aruba and St. Maarten is still in talks with the Netherlands about support.
