boysandals09102018PHILIPSBURG:--- The Lions Club distributed some 1300 kilos of clothing to the less fortunate needy in the community over the weekend. People were so happy and elated while collecting some of the items on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Lions President Carmen Lake Reyes expressing her clubs joy said, when that happens that makes the reason for serving the community even more meaningful. She was referring to the Lion’s Club clothing Distribution drive on Saturday last.

Many people turned out to get clothing and get themselves some suitable wear which was provided by the Club at the Lions Civic Center. Some of the items included children’s shoes, pants, dresses, shirts, men and women shoes, t-shirts and much more.

Lions President Carmen Lake Reyes “It felt good and we could do this again. There was so many thank you’s from the people who came and left with items expressing their gratitude as they left, some leaving with smiles, others pure satisfaction and happy faces.

Last year’s devasting hurricane left many people homeless and without clothes. One lady from one of the nearby shelters came with her 2 small sons stillsons still out of a job and got some things for herself and her children. They included shoes for the children to wear, a few dress pants for Sunday School and dresses for her, maybe to be used at her next job interview. She is a social worker by profession. You could see it was a load off her shoulders knowing that today she could get a little help and a push forward.

The items went very fast, people started gathering from early in the morning. Mostly women and children and a few men in between came to see what they could get.
Lion member Dennis Lake expressed surprise to see how many people turned out despite the inclement weather conditions. The distribution of the items took place inside the Lion’s Den Civic Centre with a number of Lions present to assist and supervise in the sorting and distribution to the public.

The items were part of a donation by Copa Airlines. Earlier this year the club received 65 suitcases from Ms. Ilonka Heisterkamp of Copa Airlines which were to be distributed to the community. Lions President Carmen Lake Reyes thanked Copa Airlines rep on St. Maarten Ms and Ilonka Heisterkamp for offering the kind gesture to the Club and the community of St Maarten who they serve. Something great came out of it. Happy faces, and smiling faces all around.

The Lions Club next big pet project is the annual Xmas Bingo.
