PHILIPSBURG:--- Environment Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) Foundation is once again offering its educational program, adding practical workshops to the curriculum. Within this program they also offer summer activities for students of all ages.
The environment in St. Maarten, as well as the wellbeing of its citizens, is threatened by landfill fires, water pollution, and the devastating effects of climate change as evidenced by a strong hurricane season.
Understanding the roots of problems brings us one step closer to the solution. For this reason, EPIC’s educational program has added practical workshops to its curriculum along with presentations and field trips such as hikes, litter clean-ups, tree planting, and bird watching trips. Students of all ages and diverse community groups can take action, learn new skills, and understand and appreciate nature by putting theory into practice.
By integrating the community into environmental projects, EPIC aims to create environmental awareness, increase knowledge about St. Maarten’s natural heritage, and develop a deeper understanding about current threats to the environment as well as solutions.
The presentations are adapted to different levels of knowledge and age groups.
From tree planting to upcycling crafts to identifying bush tea plants, the educational program workshops will improve participant’s skills.
Participants have a choice of three educational packages 1) Pollution and Recycling 2) Natural Heritage and Biodiversity 3) Climate Change and Consequences for St. Maarten.
