culturalcntr30082010Philipsburg:--- Cleaning up St. Maarten in all areas is a task the residents and members of public works have begun shortly after hurricane Earl passed across St. Maarten and its neighboring islands. While the island was spared from significant damage one of the most worrisome scenes is the areas where the different political parties had their posters.
rippedroof30082010Even though the Island Lt. Governor and Chairman of EOC urged all political parties to make the necessary arrangements to remove their political paraphernalia from alongside the public roads as hurricane Earl approached, the political parties only safeguarded their posters leaving the wooden frames in their respective positions alongside public roads.
dwnbranches30082010These frames were seen in different locations tumbled across the roads and in some cases were blown on to private properties. At least three 40-foot containers that are used for political posters were also overturned with the high winds. A situation which is dangerous for road users and members of the public in general. Signs on several buildings such as Motor World, Office 1 Superstore, The Daily Herald and a few road signs were also blown down. A few houses also lost their roof including a roadside restaurant in Cole Bay.
dwnpowerpost30082010Another eye sore during the passing of Earl and which made cleaning up more difficult in some areas was the overflowing garbage bins on both sides of the island. Many of these bins fell and the uncollected garbage washed away in the nearby drains, causing unnecessary flooding.
While the heavy winds has already subsided St. Maarten still has to prepare for at least 8 inches of rainfall which is expected from Earl, while a tropical storm Fiona is already making its way towards the Leeward islands.
A large amount of trees broke down leaving many roads inaccessible, cable and electrical poles were also down leaving many areas without electricity. The board walk was full of sand and sea weed as it is clear that the sea water due to rough seas washed onto the boardwalk. Rescue and the clean-up crews began cleaning up the Great Bay area shortly after the passing of Earl even though the curfew was not yet lifted. Heavy equipments from MNO was seen removing the sand that came in from Great Bay beach while some residents in the area lent a helping hand to remove the trees that fell in their immediate neighborhoods.
sgtrailer30082010Police officers and members of the Voluntary Korps braved the heavy rains as they controlled each passing vehicle and to maintain the curfew. In some areas the police vehicle was seen across the roads as the officers tried their best to make sure that people were not out and about unnecessarily and to maintain public order. Some youths that were walking out of St. Peters area with hoodies were made to turn back as they were not able to say exactly where they were going. Police did their best to avoid looting and theft throughout the storm.
sgposterframes30082010Residents in almost every area were seen outside of their homes trying to clean up after Earl. The residents of Beacon Hill were surely locked in as the waves from Maho beach were washing up across the road and running on to the airport runway. The Sunset Beach Bar suffered significant damage as the waves were beating into the restaurant balcony and sitting area. Debris was also seen in the airport parking lots. GEBE power plant also seemed to suffer from sea water damage. It was clear that the waves from Cape Bay Beach were washing onto the GEBE power plant property.
townframes30082010Even though Earl was well away from St. Maarten he leaves behind severe sea conditions in the Great Bay and Simpson Bay areas. The A. C Wathey Cruise dock was almost covered with high waves, at certain point the cruise dock was no longer visible. The water in the Great Salt pond was also very high shortly after the passing of Earl. It is not yet known if the pumps would help in eliminating the water since the seas itself was very rough.
boardwalk30082010While the island has been spared significant damage residents of St. Maarten needs to remain vigilante as Fiona approaches. We urge the three political parties to use the remaining time we have to remove their fallen poster frames to avoid personal injuries to our residents and visitors.
Several areas on the French side of the island also suffered the loss of electricity. EDF workers were waiting after 2pm on Monday for clearance from the Prefet Delegue to begin accessing the damage that was caused to the over head power lines.

The trash will feed the rats, a bad thing.

Lack of education I think. Radio stations should have asked people to wait until the storm had pa*sed. Now we have floods because drains are clogged.

If gov. /public works don’t start to clean and make the island ready for hurricane season this is what happens everytime.
No they rather wait for some community organization to do it for them instead and the best part about it is, when these organizations clean up, the public works tells them that they should not throw out industrial garbage at the big garbage bins/dumpsters, but they should call a garbage collection company to come and pick it up. (Note: this is public works job)
So you see my friends until the government of St. Maarten gets its act together things will never change!!
It all boils down to having vision and proper leadership in order for things to get better in this place, and it doesn’t matter how much elections we have and who we elect, this is a matter of having proper policies in place and educated department heads (not the ones put there by a politicians) who runs his/her department in the right manner and is only accountable to the people and not the one who put them there.
And only then will this island start to go forward, where everybody is treated equally and is given a fair chance.
By these means, we will be prepared for anything that comes our way, from a hurricane to our new status on October the 10th 2010.

DUTCH PEOPLE CRITICIZING FRENCH PEOPLE, AND FRENCH PEOPLE CRITICIZING DUTCH PEOPLE.... NEED TO STOP .
WE ARE ONE SMALL LITTLE ISLAND , IF WE CANT LIVE IN UNITY WITH EACH OTHER
HOW DO WE EXPECT OTHER PEOPLE TO THREAT US , WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE WE ARE THE ONE'S THAT HAVE TO STAY IN SXM AND LIVE AS ONE .
IF ONE OF US SEE THE NEXT ONE FALLEN WE SHOULD BE THE FIRST ONE TO GIVE AN HELPING HAND .
ITS NOT ABOUT A NICE CEREMONY ON THE 11 OF NOVEMBER AND THEN WE EATING UP AND CRITICIZING EACH OTHER
OUR LEADERS NEED TO START BY SHOWING THE EXAMPLE BOTH FRENCH AND DUTCH

I want to know why the "decision makers" didn't put out public notices that all "trash" would be picked up on X day due to the impending storm? It is not like they didn't know the storm was coming... doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that any "debris" will become a problem in storm and flooding conditions. Leaders could have easily remedied this "trash" problem with just a little planning. And the "political" signs and flags shoud have been taken down by the candidates. Geeze!

As frequent visitor the St. Martin and to other islands in the region, I am appalled to witness how Government allows for political parties to endanger the lives of people on the island during the hurricane season.
Of course, I mean the Dutch side, because on the French side the State has put a much better and professional campaign rules into law.
While most political parties have removed their large bill boards, most have not done so with the 2x4 structures, which during a hurricane can become powerful missiles.
God forbid, if anyone gets hurt.
Especially, as a visitor I must warn your government, that if an US-citizen visiting the island gets hurt, the negative consequences can perhaps be even more devastating for the people of this island, economically than the hurricanes themselves.
in ending and without interfering in your politics, I really wonder what you St. Martin people expect from political parties, that put their own population at terrible risk ?
God bless the people of this wonderful island.

If these politicians aint responsible enough to care enough for the people to want to take down their boards, then it shows they care only for themself and not for the people they want vote for them. Sad to realise that. Shows to how irresponsible they will be with the affairs of the land. And you expect the youths to not want to go looting? then tell our so called politicians to stop their own looting (so to speak) by NOT putting the lives and livelyhood of the people at risk.
Let us wait to see if they will have the guts to put them back up.

It was only the UP party that took down their posters and the wooden frames that they were on.
National Alliance and DP left their wooden frames and little red flags to stab ppl during the hurricane - they should be ashamed.
For that careless "looking to save $" sh*t, they're surely not gettin my vote!

By NA... CPA here we come.

As much as I hate to promote the UP of TO, I am convinced that his party and the CPA of Jeffrey together should form the next coalition to govern the island.
Along with my family i have always been a supporter of the NA.
However, we are so disgusted with the bloody arrogance and the dictatorial attitude of William Marlin, that we have to deided to silently vote for the CPA of Jeffrey this time.
We want to send a very strong message the the NA and the DP that the St. Maarten people really want a change and a government, which also is there for them.
Although TO is a Wathey and loves money, he is also very pragmatic and open for really different views such as from Gracita, who I surely hope will not sell out St. Martiners, like William and his gang are doing, along with Sarah and hers did.
They simply put foreigners, naturalized people and illegal immigrants ahead of the St. Martin people and this is unacceptable to us.
I hope that my NA party-members, who also believe in the message of the CPA, will vote for him, so that finally we St. Martiners can have a government that looks out for us st. Martners first.
That makes more sense than all the big talk of the other parties.
