Great Bay, - "I have listened to the comments made by Bill O'Reilly about St. Maarten repeatedly, and although his general tone was not flattering, I take good note that he took pains to separate the St. Maarten people and the resorts from his characterization of the 'authorities running the island' as "largely pinheads," said Director of Tourism, Regina LaBega in her initial reaction to the statements made by the host of "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News Channel in the Pinheads and Patriots section of his Caribbean Edition, broadcast on May 4.
After praising Saba and Anguilla, O'Reilly described St. Maarten, "especially the Dutch side, a disaster".
"Chaos... doesn't even come close to describing the governmental situation down there – not the folks, the government. The resorts are alright, but the authorities running the island are pinheads," O'Reilly said, while adding that his viewers would like Anguilla better.
"Of course, this is nothing to rejoice about; but it is nothing to panic about either," LaBega stated. "Perhaps it is worth remembering that the owner of Fox, media mogul Rupert Murdoch has been a frequent guest of St. Maarten for at least a decade now, coming here every year with his luxury yacht. There must be a reason he has chosen to make St. Maarten the homeport for his winter vacation."
"In other words, I would be more concerned if O'Reilly's boss – Rupert Murdoch himself – were to make any derogatory remarks about St. Maarten, its people, or even its government," the Director of Tourism added.
LaBega was, however, quick to point out that negative comments about the destination generally should not be seen as a condemnation, but as a call to action to improve "our services, our properties, our overall standard of living in a sustainable manner, bearing in mind that we are doing these first and foremost for ourselves and for our children's children."
"We can be defensive all we want or question the motives and/or agenda of those who make such negative remarks, but one thing is sure, we would be playing ostrich if we refuse to recognize the challenges we're facing together as a people, and work hard to overcome and seek sustainable solutions to them," LaBega said.
"The reason Commissioner Frans Richardson and I are currently in Brazil is to further solidify arrangements that would lead to an increased market share of this fast-growing Latin American market. We will certainly not be distracted from this endeavor," the Director of Tourism said.
"Gol Airlines, one of Brazil's leading carriers, will begin weekly, year round, scheduled flights to St. Maarten on June 1, 2010 and there is a good possibility that we may be able to add another airline on the same route. This is our focus: to make St. Maarten a year-round destination by opening up new markets without, of course, ignoring our traditional source of visitors. It is a mission we must accomplish to continue to fill our hotel rooms, our restaurants and stores and keep our economy on the right track," LaBega concluded.

Rupert Murdoch might be a frequent visitor for at least a decade but 2 things comes 2 mind. Was he, personally, here since the new Govt. took office? When he pulls up in his luxury yacht, does he remain on the Island or does he run off to Anguilla, SKB or St. Barths as so many other big shots seem to be doing lately?

As Labega said, he is O'reilly's boss, If he did not agree with the statement an apology would have been made already .... so obviously he agrees. (Food for thought).

Secondly, Stop trying to throw sand in our eyes. Brazil will NEVER be a vital market for SXM. While they might have other resources, tourism IS one of their biggest products also. They ARE more like our competitors and it is proven since our Commissioners and others have to be jetting of to Brazil 2 or 3 times per year. LOL.

Build up and secure what you NOW have in hand. Remember, it is better to have 1 bird in the hand than 10 in the sky. A fact our Leaders definitely do not understand.

Who has more problems and crime than " America " and yet they have the biggest tourist industry in the world.
If he wants to talk about large pinheads he should ask himself; what good did the last president did for the US.
And tell him to wipe his nose when he sneeze and wash his hands in the end. Because those same comments will come back to haunt him some day. O'reilly keep your nose over there in the United States Of America, we do not need rotten comments to bring our island down. Tell him to keep those flattering comment to himself,,,,Big shame of him to throw us under the bus,,,. And another thing ask him if he knows how many Americans lives on our island and holds a Dutch pa*sport. We never one day made them feel uncomfortable living on Dutch St Maarten.

O'Reilly is an A** and nothing more. But the BS of Murdock likes SXM is nonsense. The commissionor should stop flying all over the world and get some work done in the economic department so we can be ready for the upcoming season. get the business lisenses for the people done instead of only flying and by the way FRANS the damm recession isn't over. I heard maria question that and he was bold and stated the recession over but today his own economic figures show different and they singing a different tune to tax the people with TOT

- When the gods wish to punish us they answer our prayers.

- There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart’s desire. The other is to gain it.

-More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.

-Being frustrated is disagreeable, but the real disasters in life begin when you get what you want.

-In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants and the other is getting it.

-How many of our daydreams would darken into nightmares, were there any danger of their coming true.

BOTTOM LINE: The nightmare is here, you ask for it and you got. Enjoy the ride.

Our politicians ARE pinheads. Some variety in size I agree, some are sewing pinheads and some are like those ones you use for cork notice boards, but pinheads all the same.
I think far too many people are giving a pa*s and defending against what O'Reilly said JUST because they feel they have to stand up for fellow SXM'ers. Don't bring down our own they say.

Some people just need to figure if there is any truth to the comment instead, and the evidence is all around you!

To my fellow St. Maarteners, why should we let the comments of an ignorant celeb put us in a panic. As a worker in the tourism sector, St. Maarten is still a preferred destination. Every day I have encounters with tourists who highly praise the island and it's people. I have encounters with tourists who consistently ask to switch places. They constantly talk about the great shopping. There are those that come yearly to the island because they love it.

As for Yes But...... Brazil can be a vital market for St. Maarten. When they come here they a big shoppers. That means money is being generated into the economy. They are family oriented people so when they travel they travel in groups. This means more rooms.
A new airline also means more employees.

To end, let's start thinking postive for negativity will always be a driving force in keeping us down. Remember, St. Maarten is still a preferred destination and with positive attitudes we will forever be that.

NB: Out of every negative there's a positive. O'Reilly's bad press just might bring tourist to the island because his viewers will want to find out for themselves. smilies/smiley.gif

I totally agree with the comment made by the SXMER.
This was quite obvious during the scandal on our sister island of Aruba a few years ago. The more the American Press tried to Bash Aruba by telling the world how unsafe Aruba was, the more visitors flocked to the island. Up until today many Americans go there for a vacation. So let us do what we have to do and continue to build our island and take care of the problems that they encounter.

Labega needs to get a clue, she is the one holding SXM back from marketing itself in different areas of the world, Brazil is NOT a vital market they are another poor South American nation that needs help themselves, Regina needs to consult with people that knows what they are talking about, for example we just had the biggest cultural happening on the island "Carnival", Why was this not advertised to the tourist ships before hand ??? not one person coming from the harbour (tourists) knew what was going on, these people want to experience culture..... Huge missed opportunity....
Ms Labega you need to stop being a one man show and a know it all and become a Team member, listen to what people have to say and you will see a big difference.

Bill 'O probably got stuck in traffic between the airport and the ferry to Anguilla, or got thrown out of strip club for being drunk irish a*sh*le that he is....
From 2001 until about 2007 he was #1 French hater in the States, and interestingly while he mentioned Saba and Anguilla, he didn't mention St. Barths.
But even being a right-wind nut, a mild racist, and anti-french does not mean he's wrong on the subject of SXM's government. Although I doubt he knows anything about it. Like I said, probably gut stuck in traffic during the bridge opening or something.... and as usual blames the gov't. Especially if Black guy is in charge, just like in the States.

On the subject of hes boss, Rupert - well, billionaires like Murdoch, or Abramovich, or Leslie Wexner, or even Tiger Woods (whose mega-yachts or planes were spotted in SXM ) do not really see what the island is liek: they arrive to the airport, and either take a helicopter ride to their boat, or go through the special customs desk, through special exit, hot into tinted-windows Land Rover and drive to their boat. That's as much island as they will see....

To: Do right by SXM!!

Brazilians have been coming here for years during the season. The CVC tour operators have been operating on SXM for years.

For the seasons TAM Airlines would operate the charter flights out of Brazil every Saturday. Until last year GOL took over the route.

GOL operated the charter flights for this tourist season. Only Brazilians were allowed to travel on this charter flight. What is happening now is that GOL will be flying as a regular airline making it possible for any one to travel on this airline to Brazil year round.

Before you had to travel on American with stops. GOL will now make it possible to go direct.

Thanks for that update. So I was correct in my a*sumptions that money will be flowing OUT OF SXM instead of extra money flowing INTO SXM.

So what our officials are securing is that not only SXM'ers but people from the other Islands, instead of just coming to SXM could just use us as a hub to fly out TO Brazil.

So please explain to me ..... WHERE IS THE BEEF????????
