stewartjohnson30032010Philipsburg – In reference to the ongoing police controls that are taking place throughout the island, some individuals have casted doubt on the legitimacy and implementation of the tint ordinance. One of the major arguments has been that the tint is purchased to shield the occupants from the harmful rays of the sun as well as protecting the interior of the vehicle; tint that has been purchased by the hard-working, tax-paying citizens that are burdened by the high cost of living.
Taking such into consideration, Stuart Johnson feels it necessary to revise the tint ordinance. Johnson, Vice-President of the Democratic Party board and a candidate of the same faction, also believes that serious adjustments should be made to the ordinance or even removed completely.
His claim is that the initial implementation of the tint ordinance took place during the time when a higher crime rate was said to be prevalent. "Where it concerns the crime issue, has this been effective with the tint ordinance a few years ago?" Johnson questions. "Have we seen a reduction in the number of crimes committed in relation to the tint ordinance? If we truly wanted the tint ordinance to be properly implemented utilizing a comprehensive approach, we should be seeing a complete ban of it being sold by retailers and wholesalers locally," he remarked further. The concern is that establishments are allowed to sell tint, thus hindering the effectiveness of the ordinance.
Johnson concludes that "We, the people of St. Maarten, must should come together to discuss and address this particular issue as well as other issues taking place in the community, such as education and crime, amongst other priority areas."

But what wrong with this gay politician? He just dont want nobody see when he and Erno Labega does be driving around like husband and wife in his car. Hardworking people buy guns too. That make it right? It is a fact that robbers hide behind these tints you dummy! You aint care about the people. You care about yourself. For my part they can make a law for you alone to drive around with your tints. The Stewart Johnson Law. That will make you feel better right? Sorry for us when we go separate status!

I read all these comments and I noticed that the first comment is basically against Stewart because the person believes he is gay. Which is discrimination by the way. And the third comment is blaming SMN News for a reader's opinion. The website shouldn't block people comments just because they don't agree with it or you don't agree with it. I think it's good that they allow them so we can see how small minded some people are.
Stewart makes a valid point.....the tint issue is a joke. Police have bigger things to worry about......

This is a democratic country, everyone has a write to say what they want. Who knows maybe #1 is a jealous ex-lover of one of the two, but all in all we can't ask anyone not to voice their opinion. It is up to everyone of us to believe, investigate, or disreguard other people's comments, but we can't be preaching for SXM'ers to start speaking out and when they do start people like #3 and #5 start telling people to shut up.

I comment this news media for giving the people what they want. We come hear looking for news and comments, and that's what we get. You can't have all positive comments, else people are going to start calling this media page one sided.

On the other hand profanity should be filtered out, in respect to the country.

i don't see his valid point...which is there is no significant link between tint and lowering crime and his conclusion is basically well since it didn't reduce crime lets make it easier for criminals and harder for police...use your brain dont you think it helps police to see who is driving and wether they pointing a gun at the officer stopping him?? wheres is the valid point? you are allowed to have tint to a certain degree and the fact that establishments can still sell darker tint is because no only cars use tint.
and these are our politicians! trying to get ahead by telling what most want to hear not whats good for the community..i hope the cops issue a statement against this in the paper so we can all be educated.. mostly Stewart

Stop saying Stuart is gay because he is not. He is a hard working citizen of this island. He is an educator and is doing something with himself and good for the island. Unlike many of these so call gansters and thugs we have here on the island just on te block smoking up their head all day long.

Stuart is right about the tint. Crime has not gone down. The tint should not be the issue when it comes to crime on this island.

Actually in my opinion to only relate the aspect of tinting to only crime is futile. The use of tints or the lack of tints is more a safety issue than a criminal issue. If Mr. Johnson wants to equate that to crime then so be it, but it does indicate how short sighted he may be in relation to this issue. Being able to see who is driving a vehicle is also a safety issue not only a criminal issue.

I am glad Stuart brought the subject of tint up so that everyone can give their opinion on the matter. Discard all other personal attacks on him. He doesn't have to go back to Saba if he doesn't want to, he grew up here in Sxm and I know him to be a respectable young man, whatever his sexual preference may be.

People, please let's grow up. I for one, don't care about Johnson's sexual persuasions, one way or the other. Neither am I a supporter of the party he is affiliated with.

However, I do think we should grow up and intelligently debate each other on ideas, issues, topics and proposals.

When are we going to grow up and become mature enough to conduct a public discussion at an acceptable level?

Let's not all behave as if we are illiterates, and jack-a**es -- even it may seem entertaining at the time.
