PHILIPSBURG—The Department for Education Research Policy and Innovations is reminding and encouraging all parents of the FBE and VSBO schools to attend the "Active Parenting" workshops that are still available at their child's school so that they can become properly informed.

At the beginning of this New Year all schools continue to offer "Active Parenting" workshops for parents.
Several of the FBE schools started in January while other schools will begin their sessions February.

This program that started since school year 2007-08 is organized by DERPI, and financed through USONA with Dutch Development Funds, as part of the innovations in Education.

DERPI is of the opinion that without proper parental participation in education success is not guaranteed for the youth.

Parents attending these sessions in several schools last week had lively discussions and are all of the opinion that all parents can benefit from these sessions and help each other to raise their children.
The adage "It takes a village to raise a child."

These workshops are offered for parents in both English and Spanish language.

Most of the parents have expressed gratitude to DERPI for giving them these opportunities to obtain better or even revisit and strengthen their parenting skills.

DERPI again encourages parents to inquire at their children's respective schools for information about workshops and schedules.

All workshops are offered to parents completely free of charge. Besides the discussions and presentations, the parents will also receive a parent guide (book) free of charge.

The Department for Educational Research, Policy and Education remain committed to the parents and children of Sint Maarten with the "Active Parenting Program" and encourage all parents to fully participate in these sessions.

I attended the program, and it is definitely positive, very eye opening. I encourage all parents(mother and father) to try their utmost and attend, it is worth it.

@ Professionalism. Good to get a feed back by someone who actually attended. In making inquiries as to several suggestions made on this site to several articles it is becoming clear that there are quite a number of "active" programs available to help both parents and students/youth. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, subsidies and sponsors, they cannot be advertised on a broad scale since they do not have the means to tackle the many problems on a large scale.

Parents and children alike can contact either their schools, The (Island) department of Labor and Social Welfare, their house doctors or any psychologists, in order to get information.

Most of these programs are very effective but as I said, are not sponsored sufficiently. Therefore we as a community, parents as well as businesses, should start getting involved and a*sists these "non profit" organizations financially or how ever else required, be it financially or time wise. Donations and sponsorships do not always have to be large sums but every little bits help.
Contact them and see how we all could help, after all, we are going into Country status, we have to help ourselves. Government cannot do it alone and it is all about our youth, children, teenagers ..... yes ..... our future.

From a single parent to "Single Parent" once you've decided you are going to attend make the sacrifice to complete it.

There are some parents who say they do not need outsiders or workshops(however you want to put it) to show and tell them how to raise their child. But that is not what it is about

AsI mentioned before I am a single parent also, and I think it is a good idea you will invite your friends along. Success.

I attended the first session last Wednesday at St. Dominic Primary and found it to be very informative. I even have an a*signment as well as some homework to do. At the first session, I realized that at times I really do let my child get way with things and also I learned different ways of handling situations. It also made me realize that at times the way we answer, ignore and push away our kids may seem like nothing to us parents, but to the child it is another meaning. I really appreciated the fathers that came out too that night. It shows that some fathers still have interest in their children Kuddos to the Dads and Big Ups to the Moms. Remember it takes a village to raise a child.
