federalelections22012010Philipsburg: --- The National Alliance under the umbrella team St. Maarten has made history early Saturday morning when the final results of the parliamentary elections was delivered. Gathering 6, 939 votes the National Alliance won all three seats in parliament. The Democratic Party came out with 3,560 votes, which was not enough for them to hold on to their only seat. While the Peoples Progressive Party 920 votes. Of the 11,419 votes that were casted, some 194 of them were invalid while there were 153 blank votes. For the first time 61% of the voters showed up at the 16 polling stations to cast their votes in a federal election.
Supporters of the National Alliance knew they were going to be victorious in this election as their party led the each of the 16 polling stations. The National Alliance supporters gathered outside of the Government Administration building as the results came in. As the scores were given the NA, supporters screamed out as they celebrate their party's victory. In 1975 the Democratic Party captured all three seats in parliament says moderator Edgar Lynch while this is the first time the National Alliance won an election outright.
Marlin made sure he thanked councilman Louis Laveist for his endorsement and his show of confidence towards the National Alliance. He said from day one Laveist wanted nothing in return for his support. Also witnessing the landslide and historical victory was Daren James the keynote speaker of the National Alliance congress. James flew back to St. Maarten to make sure he cast his vote on Friday. Also expressing gratitude to the supporters was commissioner vice president of the National Alliance Frans Richardson.

Leader of the National Alliance in his address said every member of the team worked hard to make sure they won, he said even though the campaign period was short it was an intense one. Marlin told his supporters that even though he and his vice president of the National Alliance Frans Richardson won the senate seats they would not be going to parliament since they are already commissioners in the island government.
Marlin made clear that the National Alliance or no one party can take St. Maarten to the finish line constitutionally and he called on the members of all other political parties especially the Democratic Party to return to the team St. Maarten. He said even though the people has given the mandate to the National Alliance they need to work hands in hands to realize what the people voted for some ten years ago. Marlin said the campaign is over and now is not the time to bicker since the clock is ticking and negotiations will have to begin as early as February 11.
Marlin said his party has been contesting elections for the past 32 years under the parties SPM, SPA and then the National Alliance and he thanked GOD for Friday's victory. He also thanked the voters who made sure they made use of their voting rights by making sure they cast their ballots. He said the winning is not for any one party instead it is St. Maarten that won and they must come together in the interest of the entire island.

Most definitely the congrats are in place for the NA.
That party has effectively taken the 'know how' of campaigning away for the DP and to yet a next unprecedented level.
In many ways this election result constitutes a 'political earthquake', a paradigm-shift on the 'Friendly-island' and is worth extensive, professional, unbiased analyses in the various talk shows
What really disappointed me was that, after the final results became known by the EWA -panel, the leader of the DP did not accept the invitation to come to the studio to comment on the results.
Her refusal fact allowed for the NA leader William MARLIN to look absolutely 'preseidential' and confident without being cocky; he was at his best.
It is to say the very least, disappointing that the leader of the DP, Sarah WESCOT-WILLIAMS did not make use of that opportunity to accept the invitation to at least thank those who voted for her and congratulate William MARLIN with his historic victory.
What kind of example does this set for our youngsters ?
That if you did not win, you simply walk away ?
How does this spoiled child attitude bode for any future 'Country St. Maarten' ?
To me when a politician can accept defeat by the polls at the hand of the voters and publicly congratulate one's opponont, that shows an aspect of REAL leadership and hope for a better world.
The question should therefore be asked WHY did not the leader of the DP show sportsman- or sport woman-ship and accept the will of the people in grace.
That would have also made her a 'winner'.
is it about 'entitlement to the crown' ?????
The leader of the NA, William MARLIN on the other side is showing steady growth and maturity as a leader.
He (and his party and NA followers in general) showed this again when in his victory speech he showed constraint and invited the DP to 'team St. Martin' , because the cause is not about Sarah or the DP, or about William or the NA or about Gracita or the PPA.
Did Sarah's lack of sports (wo)manship in fact show that it was more about 'SARAH' and her personal aspirations than about 'Country St. Martin' ?
The people have the right to know.

Leopold JAMES.

Okay,

the joke is over - a grand total of 16,000 people determines the outcome of seventy thousand lives. St. Marteen, in the best terms is a small village in the world. Compare the total votes for any village in the US, UK or canada and you will see similar numbers. At best the winner is a mayor - who have should be out selling cars with motoworld - instead of representing a "soon" to be independant nation.

give me a break - look at dominica and its independance - and ask other scholars to show me how the "locals", who have never actuallly been in business can attempt to understand what they are are about to do. Everyone believed that Obama was the second coming, look where he is now - dead inthe water. I pray, that St Maarten will continue to attract investors - without them the, sxm is dead. Further the brooks tower accord, was an absoulte failure, why - because intellectual's are smarter than the government.

This is not tough - if 20K determine the voting populace and I have a job - but don't vote and thus stand nothing to gain, why would I register. My greatest fear is that the locals from haiti return to their homeland. Quite frankly, I doubt anyone would be left to work, but the "locals" would still have their cool new political tshirts.

Sorry the system is broken - we all know it - fix it now

Congrats to NA on their victory.

However, over the past years, W. Marlin never came to the building to either thank his supporters or for any analysis of the election outcome, so why should Sarah have to do so now?. After being all day on the road, could it be that she needed some serious rest. You know Sarah will make one of her lengthy speeches once she has had time to rest up.

We know that we are appreciated for staying dedicated DP supporters which we still are. The analysis we all know. There were many mistakes made, wrong decisions made (f.i. letting Maria go to please a bunch of losers)
Sarah knew the outcome before the results were made known but we all accept defeat at this point and will sincerely give the NA alliance a chance to prove that they are the better politicians to lead us to ??????

I personally do not believe in the date 10/10, via DP or NA (never did), we are simply not ready, there is still much work to be done, systems and people to properly put in place. I trust that the Ruling Government will have the will power, courage and ability to make the right decisions. It is time for Sarah to get a break from all of this stress, lick her wounds and recoup for next election.
Sarah IS THE WINNER, she has proven that she is far from being dead, she actually won the election on an individual basis, she got the most votes, even more than William Marlin. Her choice in candidates was very weak, she was (mis)-led by those who surrounded her. That is a fact and proper analysis of this election.

I however, sincerely, wish the NA much strength since the road ahead will be a difficult one, keep your heads on, take your time to properly put the final touches together. Don't lead us in the same direction as many of our neighboring Islands when they finally received their separate status or independence and years after cannot get their acts together, having their people run away to find a better life elsewhere. Our people have been there and done that, don't want to do it again. Right now we, sxm, is the jewel of the Caribbean, Even though much has to be changed we are far more prosperous than 90% of the other Islands around us. Don't let greed and ignorance lead you, may God be your guiding light.

Congratulations to the winning party. Your work is ahead, the people put their trust in you to lead them through to Country St Maarten. To the voters, have high expectations of your Leadership, don't let the ball drop. There's a lot to do yet to become Country St Maarten so keep them responsible and accountable at all time. The theory of "people make mistakes" that we hear so often is not acceptable with so much at stake. Going forward we look for true, honest leaders working for one common goal , expect no less.

Leopard, you do not deserve an answer. I have never seen Mr William Marlin up on the podium after being defeated at the poles. Sarah is much smarter than you think and you were not going to take this oportunity to try to ridicule her.
Sarah is the biggest vote getter and that sends a clear message.
Thanks to louis. Louis you astrology will soon go to jail where you belong, and to you Theo shame on you. You campaigned to the South Reward people to vote White and you and your imediate families voted blank. Let me see you form your party now. You might be ilegible to make patties and cakes to sell but not thrive on a new party. You Theo are dead politiacally and you know it , Your only chance is to come back to the DP.
Sarah , this too will come to pass. Lots of hundred dollars bills was rolled up in Tshirts on election day and thats the reason for the outcome. DP has always come around and WE WILL RISE.

Comgratulations to all the candidates, members, voters and supporters of the National Alliance. You have achieved your goal. We take part in elections seeking the trust of the public to govern our country. You William Marlin has been entrusted the leadership of this country in a most difficult yet precious time. God gives no man more than he can bear. Take this as a god given fact. He has prepared you throughout your entire political career for the task he's now placed in your hands. God and the St. Maarten people know you are very capable, willing and able.

Lead us with gods grace into the future and St. Maarten will prosper.

Marco Marlin
Suckergarden, Sint Maarten.

Good luck to you and
