~ Residents urged to take all precautions and call their doctor if they develop symptoms.~
PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Health Richard Panneflek along with the AMI Team working at the St. Maarten Medical Center treating COVID-19 patients urged the general public to take the necessary precautions such as wearing a mask, and follow the hygiene procedures as outlined by the CDC to avoid the spread of the virus.
Panneflek said St. Maarten has seen a drastic increase in active cases and as such everyone should begin to act responsibly.
Dr. Kiarash Mirka said COVID-19 is not a death sentence and as such persons that are experiencing symptoms should not hesitate to call CPS or their doctor. Dr. Mirka explained that persons that are experiencing mild symptoms can treat themselves with paracetamol and ensure they fully hydrate themselves, however, these persons must make sure they isolate themselves by staying at home and not spreading the virus. He urged everyone to wash their hands often with soap and water, as it is very effective even if hand sanitizers are not available.
Dr. Mirka said that St. Maarten prepared well to handle the COVID-19 outbreak and so far, patients admitted to the SMMC are doing well. Patients that were in ICU were removed as their health improve while most of the infected active cases are at home in self-quarantine and isolation.
Among the team on Monday were Dr. Kimberly Millican and Dr. Andrew Walker who also commended the government for their readiness.
Persons experiencing COVID-19 symptoms such as vomiting, aches, and pains fever or mild flu-like symptoms such as sore throat should take all the precautions or call CPS as their personnel is trained to deal with the COVID-19 patients. These persons are urged to follow the CDC guidelines as they isolate.
