richards20052009GREAT BAY,– St. Maarten's Local Chief of Police, Governor Franklyn Richards, in response to recent crime incidents on St. Maarten, is once more sounding the alarm and wants the Central Government to take note of the situation.
The Local Chief of Police is of the opinion that while commitments have been made for a structural approach to addressing law and order on our island, police re-enforcements are needed right now.
The Local Chief of Police is extremely worried about the recent spate of robberies and two incidents resulting in loss of life last week, in St. Maarten.
"These senseless killings deserve our collective condemnation and cannot be allowed to continue without an appropriate response by authorities. Any and all lives taken should be condemned and so should be all acts of violence in our community", notes Richards.
As such, the Minister of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles has been briefed on the situation and a formal request is underway asking that police re-enforcements be made available to St. Maarten as soon as possible.
The recent killings and the repeated reports of home invasions, armed robberies and other violent incidents, is indicative that the criminal element continues operating with disdain for life and our safety, says Richards.
He noted that the present situation is truly alarming and is one requiring the immediate response of the responsible authorities, charged with guaranteeing safety and security for the people of St. Maarten.
Local Chief of Police, Governor Franklyn Richards says that the public and operators of businesses have no other choice but to stay alert, at all times, in an effort to aid authorities in their ongoing efforts to apprehend suspects still at large.
"All of us need to stay alert and recognize that we need to do more, in order to safeguard against the innocent loss of life", notes the Local Chief of Police.
With the Christmas holiday season approaching, St. Maarten can expect additional visitors on our shores. This creates an additional challenge to law enforcement agencies already trying to cope with insufficient personnel charged with maintaining law and order.
Residents and business establishments will do well to remind themselves, employees and security staff in what to do and what not to do before, during and after coming face to face with, for example, armed criminals, especially during this holiday season.
Whereas St. Maarten is still a relatively safe place to live, this is not to say that there is no need to address the expressions of fear, which are once more being voiced.
The appropriate role of particularly the central and kingdom governments should be to provide support and technical assistance. Governor Richards says that he remains in favor of greater police visibility with the presence of more police officers on the streets, intensified controls, and increased cooperation with the Marechaussees and RST team as well as temporary police re-enforcements from Curacao.
The Local Chief of Police meanwhile reminds victims of crime and persons witnessing or suspecting crimes to report these to police authorities immediately.

Only now he has filed a formal request?? Mr. Governor, how many more people have to die, get burgalarized, robbed, raped, etc. before you do something about it? Instead of spending money on a useless ring-road project, can't the money better be spent in bringing and paying for extra police support on the island and make a good clean up once and for all? Zero-tolerance should be implemented permanently! Isn't the safety and well-being of the people of Sint Maarten not worth it? This has gone on far too long! If the Central Government doesn't have the money to send the extra support we need, then hold back on the taxes going to Curaçao and pay for them out of this money! Put our tax money directly to visible good use! And while you at it, close the border with the French Side and implement permanent border patrol, because a lot of criminals are coming over from the French Side to commit their crimes and running back across the border. They got to stop this!

We as upstanding persons in our community need to be able to protect
Ourselves just like the politicians who never get robbed or killed because
they are licensed to carry a gun; we who elected them need the same opportunity
to protect our lives and our families we are equal human being no better or less
than them. In my opinion it’s time for armed community and business groups to take charge
because there is no justice as someone pointed out the time for the crime is too short
and to sweet up at the resort in Point Blanch. Sure you’re going to hear all kind of excuses
why we should not be able to protect our “domain” as the French would say, but if anyone
had a better idea I am certain it would have been enforced already and innocent another life
would not be lost in such a manner. Cut the crap, and let us stand up against these thugs with
the only thing they understand and that is the strong arm of the people with no remorse as they
have none for our lives “Dam It”

Protect ourselves!!!!
1. We should get theright to protect ourselves and defend ourselves regardless of whatever. If we were given that right that whosoever trespa*ses our properties they are responsible for whatever happens to them,
wheter they get a good "cut**s" (and who knows remains handicapped or paralized for life)) or get killed, I believe robbers will think it twice before trying to rob us. The bastards them will get shot down befiore they cross the line.
2. I agree with hard heart. The jail senteces are much to soft.
Change the laws, it is about time. Besides, the treatment they do get in jail only invites them to continue with their crime. For most of them it is a lux; relaxing, exersising (to stay in shape for their next hit) sleeping and being served breakfast, lunch and dinner. Waw!!! what a treat.
In St. Kitts and other english countries you see these people being escorted, and bouied to go carry out some hard labour in the community. Saves goverment some money.
Think we have to start taking the laws in our own hands.
Once you kill those bastards, just throw them over the fence. Next morning pretend you know nothing and call the police tell them there seem to be a dead "buddy" outside your fence. One less S.O.B. in our community. Next!!!!!!!
