MP Doran tables motion for the update of controlled food products lists.

PHILIPSBURG: --- National Alliance Member of Parliament Egbert J. Doran tabled the third motion during the draft 2019 budget debate on Tuesday morning.
The motion which was signed by 14 Members of Parliament gives the Minister of TEATT 90 days to amend the controlled products price list and to also pay attention to the calibration which was discussed several times in parliament. The only MP that did not sign the motion presented by MP Doran is the current leader of the UD Sarah Wescot Williams.

 

 Draft Motion

The Parliament of Sint Maarten, in its meeting of June 27th, 2019

CONSIDERING:

• That the list of Government controlled products has not been updated since 2008;
• That the list of maximum priced items as stipulated by Government has not been enforced;
• That currently many persons in the community are not able to afford basic food items;
• That instead, the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunications has been issuing a monthly price comparison of an expanded list of items to show the comparative prices of goods of items across various retailer’s island wide;
• That instrument calibration is intended to eliminate or reduce bias in an instrument’s readings over a range for all continuous values;
• That calibration improves the accuracy of the measuring device;
• That the accuracy of all measuring devices degrades over time by wear and tear, electrical or mechanical shock or a hazardous manufacturing environment;
• That establishing a new department dedicated to calibration is not feasible at the present moment.

RESOLVES:

• That the Minister of TEATT immediately addresses and updates the list of Government controlled products.
• That the Minister of TEATT enforces the maximum priced items within 90 days.
• That the Minister of TEATT dedicate employees to solely deal with calibration tasks.
• That the Minister of TEATT updates Parliament within 30 days on his plan of approach with regards to above mentioned.
