EXCLUSIVE: Prosecutor in DRACO Case denied Joseph an attorney, pretrial detention extended by 8 days.

PHILIPSBURG:--- The Prosecutor along with the TBO investigators that are handling the DRACO investigation has denied Lionel Jermain Joseph the presence of his attorney citing that the attorney Joseph chose to represent him has a conflict of interest since he is representing more than one of the suspects in this investigation.
SMN News learned that Joseph chose Attorney at Law Cor Merx as his attorney and Merx is also representing Silvio Matser in this and other investigations.
According to information provided to SMN News Joseph was denied an attorney the day after he was arrested, he was taken twice to court where his pretrial detention has been extended without an attorney present.
According to information provided to SMN News, the Prosecutor took it upon themselves and called several attorneys on the island requesting that they represent Joseph while he is in custody but the attorneys and the suspect has refused to involve other attorneys on his behalf.
In an invited comment Attorney at Law Cor Merx confirmed that he is being blocked by the Prosecutor’s Office in representing his client. Merx said that the prosecutor handling the case said he has a conflict of interest in the case but in his opinion he do not have any conflict of interest because thus far he has not received any documentation for any of his clients that are suspects in the DRACO investigation.
Merx said he has since filed an appeal against the opinion
