Politics raised its ugly head again parliament.

~ Meeting to reconvene at 3 pm today.~

PHILIPSBURG:--- Politics raised its ugly head again in the Parliament of St. Maarten on Wednesday when the public meeting of parliament was called to vet the credentials of incoming Member of Parliament Jules James who will be replacing suspended MP Theodore Heyliger.

It appears that the Chairlady of Parliament is sabotaging the meeting she convened by not giving Members of Parliament timely notification based on the rules of order. Members of Parliament told SMN News they only receive the notification at 6:32 pm on Tuesday for the meeting scheduled for 11 am on Wednesday. Even the press notification of the meeting was sent out mid-morning on Wednesday.

When the meeting was convened only 5 MP’s that are supporting the government attended the meeting. Due to the lack of quorum, the public meeting had to be rescheduled to 3 pm on Wednesday. Some members of parliament said that they need to question the legality of the meeting because they received the notification for the meeting at 12: 21 pm on Wednesday for the 3 pm meeting.

The Members of Parliament from the Opposition benches said that the Chairlady of Parliament have been violating the rules of order for way too long without repercussions. “Here she is rushing to call this meeting to replace MP Heyliger who is in pretrial detention while a number of requests were submitted to call meetings and to date, they are not being scheduled”.

Some of the meetings they requested and were not called are the following.

• Concerns of the dump
• Construction of the New General Hospital.
• Tax Reform and relief --- to address the Bearing Point Contract.
• Ennia and Mullet Bay situation
• To discuss a way forward regarding the non-attendance to Parlatio
• The CRS and FATCA laws from the Minister of Finance still has to be scheduled for a vote. The deadline was since January 1st, 2019, while St. Maarten risks being blacklisted. The chair has also not recalled the continuation of the TEATT committee meetings as she is the one that must get ministers to parliament, said one Member of Parliament.
