jurendydoran29102018PHILIPSBURG:--- Member of Parliament Egbert Jurendy Doran, during a recent visit to the island of Curacao, visited the Department of “Ijkwezen”, which is the Calibrations Department there.
MP Doran was accompanied by Curacao’s Member of Parliament Yael Plet who is the chairman of Parliament’s committee of Economic Affairs there.
The reason for the MP’s visit to this department was to establish a better understanding of how it works and to make a comparison with the workings of the department on Sint Maarten.
During the Budget debate in May 2018, MP Doran inquired about the operations of the Calibrations department on Sint Maarten, but according to him, he did not receive a satisfactory answer from the respective Minister.
MP Doran then decided to conduct more research on this topic, as he recognized the importance of a proper functioning Calibrations Department within the department of Economics Affairs here on Sint Maarten.
During his tour of the department, Member of Parliament Doran was able to gather quite some information on how it is being done there, and says that he intends to follow up on this, as it is of utmost importance that the consumers on Sint Maarten are also assured that everything is being done to protect them from especially overpricing.
Calibration is testing whether a size, weight, or measuring instrument fully meets the set requirements of the Calibration Law.

This includes weighing machines at for instance: Pharmacies / Jewelry stores, Supermarkets /, Petrol dispensers at Gas Stations, Bakeries, Laundromats, Post office, Pharmacies, Water meters, Local packaging, Number Game balls, Cement and Concrete companies, and many more.
At our Medical Labs for instance the checking of the freezers, in order to ensure that accumulated blood is always stored at the right temperature.
Pharmacies are also to ensure their scales are checked, in order for persons to receive their medication in the proper dosage as prescribed by their physician in order to avoid under or even overdosing.
In addition, when members of the Judicial chain confiscate illegal drugs, this also should be weighed legally, meaning that the scales should also be checked on a regular basis, in order to provide proper information when this is requested.
Based on the Calibration Law, Government has an obligation to execute calibration on a regular basis as stipulated by Law and supervise the statutory requirements, in the interest of both the business and the consumers.
MP Doran said that he fully intends to use the above information gathered in order to ensure that Government does all that is in its power to protect the people of this country who already has so very much to deal with, from especially overpricing in Supermarkets. MP Doran will be proposing this request in writing to the Minister of TEATT and hopes to see hopes to see the establishment of the department in the near future.
The Member of Parliament closed by saying that in order for this to happen, Government needs to ensure that there are certified calibrators in the department that can provide this service legally.
