Willemstad:--- The Central Bank of Curacao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) received questions from the media in response to possible statements by the Minister of Finance of Sint Maarten, Mr. Michael Ferrier, about the limited banknote stock for Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
The CBCS, being the only authority authorized by law to commission and issue banknotes in circulation, has started the preliminary work in anticipation of the change in the constitutional structure of the then Dutch Antillean islands on 10 October 2010. to create a new currency for the monetary union of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. It would be the Caribbean guilder.
The CBCS is currently in discussion with the governments of Curaçao and Sint Maarten to come to a decision on a new currency for both countries. As long as no decision has been taken by both governments, Dutch Antillean guilder banknotes will remain in circulation.
The CBCS guarantees that it will continue to ensure that it has sufficient banknotes at all times to continue meeting the demand for banknotes.
