Philipsburg: --- Several major robberies took place over the weekend and late last week, none of which police reported to date. Jadira Veen of Pride Foundation said her home was robbed on Thursday night. Veen who was off island at the time said her husband Jerome Veen was on island but was not at home when the bandits invaded their home stealing a number of valuable items.

Veen said she lost all her jewelry, which she accumulated for over twenty years, some of which she had intended to pass on to her daughters, because of their sentimental values.

The thieves she said also stole her computer, internet router and other electronics including the games for play-station and game boy, cable and satellite box. Veen said it seems as if there was more than one person, because the thieves walked with tools to break the metal bars from their windows. She said the bandits not only broke the bars they also broke the wall, she said they broke the kitchen window, where they gain access to the house. While inside the house, the thieves she said had so much time that they opened one of her computers and took out the hard drive (RAM). Veen said the thieves nowadays are not coming empty handed, besides being armed they are walking with power tools to remove safety and security bars. One of the concerns of the well-known resident is that police is not doing a good enough job to warn its residents about the ongoing spate of robberies. Furthermore, she said both sides of the island are lacking proper security.

Veen said the police visited the home on Friday morning and they took fingerprints as they began the investigation.

Also robbed was the home of Bobby Velasquez. Velasquez said a drug addict went into his home on Saturday night, which is located upstairs of the Green House restaurant and stole a number of items. The businessman said he was in his house at the time sleeping when the bandit went through one of the guess bathroom window, all of which is recorded on his video surveillance system. Ironic though Velasquez said he noticed the invasion when he woke up on Sunday morning and up to midday on Monday, the police had not yet visited the scene. Velasquez said the bandit whom he recognized as one of the drug addict on the beach stole his music system (BOSE), his cable television box, and an IPOD.

In addition, robbed last week is the office of the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association, none of which has been reported.

SMN News was also informed that the owner of Golden Eyes was followed home and robbed. The source said the owner (Abbas) was followed to his house, the thieves it is said tied him up and robbed him of over $7000 as well as pouring gasoline on the victim and set it alight. Police said they are not aware of this incident, since no official report has been made.

Police Spokesman Johan Janchi Leonard in his statement confirmed the robbery at the residence of Jerome Veen. The police spokesman said the robbery unit is busy investigating.

If we want to be fooled by our politicians that we are 'ready' for 'Country St. Maarten status', while on 'ground-zero', where ordinary people live and are daily faced with the downward-spiraling of lawlessness on the 'Friendly island'....we ain't seen nuttin' yet.
In other words, 'steaming full speed ahead' to 'Country St. Maarten', before having cleaned up the puinhoop (mess) in every sector of our society, is a certain guarantee for becoming, the newest banana-republic on the bloc, where criminals will will have 'paradise' and the general law-abiding citizens, will live a terrifying life-style.
Too late might be our cry, if we take it out on the messenger, but fail to heed the 'message'....

As much as I understand your concerns, I do have to say that the Police have been very professional so far. They responded immediately to my call and were on the scene fast. The detective that came to my house also called a technical detective to do his investigation and he came 30 minutes later and worked diligently for about an hour to collect his evidence. If all police officers would work like this, I don't think we have a problem. We just don't have enough of them.

To Ms. Veen I say, "welcome to the real world". This is what we, the people of the "lesser" districts face almost daily. We too have valuables, believe it or not, that are of sentimental value to us stolen. Many items are handed down from our Great and grand parents and we have lost them in the same manner. We too have bars for protection but found out long time ago that they are no real security. We don't bother purchase much of value anymore since you might as well just dumb your cash in the garbage bin. So this is no shocking news to us.

I don't know if you read the daily papers and online news sites then you would have realized how "rampant" crime is on the Island. You would have understood why we cried for months for extra police a*sistance to clean up the Island of crime.

I am by no means rejoicing of your misfortune but guess it never dawned on you how bad the situation was until it now hit home. No one is above the Law but no one is above becoming a victim of crime either. That is why people of all walks of life should stand together to fight crime and not cry fowl only when they become a victim.

Testing you sound like becuase these people live in Belair they have no clue about the crime situation. A rediculous rant to say the least. Yes, crime affects anyone, and I'm sure most of us living on SXM has experienced some form of crime.
People of all walks of life should stand together, amen. And yes, we need to do a better job of telling our authorities that enough is enough. Crime is not a federal govenrment problem, it is as local as it gets. Western Union had a robbery scene yesterday. How long will it be until these brazen crime-low life people make their way into the commercial banks.
I;m sick of the excuses we get about fighting crime. A lot of people would not like to hear this, but it's time again to start these unpolular raides. You must agree, crime was at an all time low when the raides took place

It is sad that people see things in the same perspective but always have to stand "divided" in order to say the same thing. However, if you read the article, carefully and thoroughly you might yet understand my comment.
I am shocked that someone from Belair would "act" like they are unaware of the serious crime situation (spate of robberies) affecting the Island for the past years because the police is not keeping us, sufficiently, informed. Makes me wonder where they are living.

I am not rejoicing or wish anyone what has "also" happened to me (at both my home and business) as well as to so many others. Ref. police "not" updating us on "the ongoing spate of robberies", well, "that" I see as a rant. They can only report crimes that have been reported to them and it's up to the media to report all info. they receive from the police.
It is the media who publishes the police reports and as far as I have read, they have been doing so continuously. "Mr. Veen" hit the nail on the head, there are simply not enough police, especially detectives, to deal with our crime situation. The officers too are sick of the excuses they get ref. extra a*sistance. I too agree with raids and 0 tolerance units being out there but again you will have many who will condemn this. So what is the immediate solution? Surely not the bashing of the police officers.

Has it occured to the writer above and members of the public that certain crimes are not reported by the police? Please ask the police spokes person why this is happening. You might find out that the so called police management is not functioning asit should be.
It appears that at times the police spokes person themselves are not aware of the crimes reported.
If Mrs.Veen thinksthat both sides of the island has problem wth security, she is correct. As Iknow the lady in question, she is involved with her community council. Thier goup tries to keep the neighors informed as the Belair area is not a gated community such as Dawn Beach, Red Pond, Oyster Bay etc.
Maybe we should be asking our politicos if the current managemnet style of the police is woking, if not, What isDick going to do? are we atracting enough offiers for the future and how is it that just in the past weeks, break ins, home invasions and purse snatchers have in increased?
