Police release results of 2017 Carnival

PHILIPSBURG:--- The Police Department has released the following numbers for the 2017 Carnival Season from the official opening of the Festival Village on April 17th through May 3rd 2017. A total of 34 persons (29 males and 5 females) were arrested for different punishable acts mentioned on the transaction list which was published on behalf of the Public Prosecutors Office for this carnival season. A total of Fls. 4.475,- was collected in fines issued for conditional dismissals. This amount is considerably less than the prior year.
The Carnival parades and Jump-ups of 2017 were quite larger in comparison to Carnival 2016 and prior years. The total amount of arrests in 2017 remained the same. The most arrests were made during the “Jouvert Jump up” (9) and the “Opening Jump up” (7). 23 persons were arrested for fighting, 3 persons for illegal drugs possession, 1 person for ill-treatment, 1 person for the destruction of property and 6 persons for public intoxication.
The Police Department has noticed a significant overall improvement in the conduct of the youth during this carnival period and is commending them for their improved behavior. The parents are also being commended for their input by seriously talking to their children regarding their conduct and the abuse of alcohol and drugs during the carnival period.
The Police Management is also sending out words of gratitude to the entire police force and the members of the VKS for a job well done in keeping the community and the visitors to Sint Maarten during Carnival 2017.
