Aiming to inform students and parents.

College or University 101: The United States System” workshop to be held on Jan. 26

PHILIPSBURG – What is the difference between college and university? Why do students have to take the SATs? What are credits? What is Grade Point Average or GPA?
These are a few questions aspiring U.S. college students and their parents may have, coming from St. Maarten where the education system is somewhat different. Consequently, Student Support Services Division (SSSD) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs is aiming to put students and parents at ease in regards to such questions in a comprehensive manner.
SSSD is organizing a free workshop entitled “College or University 101: The United States System” on Thursday, January 26, 2016 at SSSD’s office from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. SSSD’s office is located in the Amigo Building, across from the Police Station and next to the Windward Island Bank (WIB) in Philipsburg.
Students in their last two years of secondary school or recent graduates who are interested in studying in the United States of America (USA), and their parents, are invited to attend this free and interactive workshop.
The aim of the workshop is to ensure that students and parents walk away with a better understanding of the U.S. college and university educational system. The workshop will be covering aspects from the first year, where key differences in comparison to our own educational system need to be addressed, to the last year of college or university. Some social aspects will also be addressed.
“Anyone can research the questions about college and university and get answers but putting these answers in perspective in a comprehensive manner can make the world of difference,” SSSD officials said.
Persons interested in attending this workshop on January 26, 2017, are urged to contact SSSD at Tel: 543-1235 to reserve a spot as space is limited. Persons are also urged to be on time since this will minimize interruptions.
A similar workshop for students aiming to study in Canada is scheduled to be held on February 28, 2017.
