St Maarten hosts global Internet conference.

PHILIPSBURG:--- A group of global Internet experts will gather in Sint Maarten from October 24 to 28 for a regional tech conference focused on developing the Caribbean Internet.

Called Internet Week Sint Maarten, the meeting is expected to attract a broad profile of Internet stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, regulators, academic researchers, journalists and ordinary Internet users.

The Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will jointly kickstart the week with CaribNOG's twelfth regional meeting and ICANN’s LAC-I Roadshow.

“At CaribNOG 12, our aim is to foster dialogue with the Sint Maarten Internet community about the global Internet ecosystem, Internet resources, and other related themes,” said Stephen Lee, CaribNOG Program Director.

Albert Daniels, Manager of Stakeholder Engagement for the Caribbean at ICANN, said one main aim of the LAC-I Roadshow is “to raise awareness across the Latin America and Caribbean region on key topics related to the critical Internet infrastructure, security, stability and growth.”

The two-day gathering is supported by several important players in the global Internet landscape: the Caribbean Telecommunications Union; the American Registry for Internet Numbers; Packet Clearing House, the Internet Society (ISOC), ArkiTechs and The BrightPath Foundation.

Internet Week Sint Maarten will close with Sint Maarten on the Move, a two-day event jointly hosted by ISOC and the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses registry (LACNIC). Several regional experts will conduct hands-on workshops on topics including cyber security, Internet Governance, IPv6 adoption and Internet Exchange Points.

The weeklong conference is coordinated by the St Maarten telecommunications regulator, BTP. It is open to the public and free of charge, but space is limited and registration is required.

All events will take place at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort, Casino & Spa, Philipsburg, with a live video stream for remote participants.
