Two SXM Toastmasters Advance to 2016 District Speech Contest.

2sxmtoastmastersadvance26092016MARIGOT:--- On Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the former Eveline Halley School in Marigot, Toastmasters held the 2016 Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contest for Territory St. Maarten/St. Martin. There are currently 6 Toastmasters Clubs that fall within Areas 28 and 29, Division E, under District 81 ‘The Caribbean Toastmasters’. They are SXM Achievers, Soualiga Corporate, Philipsburg, The Disciples, Cupecoy Sunset and St. Martin Evolution (French Side) Toastmasters Club respectively. The evaluation speech contestants were Mrs. Cheryl Dangleben-York of the Soualiga Corporate Toastmasters Club and Mrs. Amanda Vital-Bedminister, of the Disciples Toastmasters Club. The humorous speech contestant was Mrs. Olga Mussington-Service, also of the Soualiga Corporate Toastmasters Club. The speech contest was organized by the St. Martin Evolution Toastmasters Club under the leadership of Area 29 Director Ms. Vernicia Brooks of the St. Martin Evolution Toastmasters Club and Ms. Kathia Magdeleine of both the St. Martin Evolution and SXM Achievers Toastmasters Clubs. The chief judge was Toastmaster Hilda Brown and the contest was chaired by Toastmaster Shirma France, in accordance with rules laid down by Toastmasters International.

In the Evaluation segment, both contestants were given 2-3 minutes to give an evaluation based on a speech given by a test speaker. The test speaker’s speech was approximately 5-7 minutes in length. Mrs. Amanda Vital-Bedminister won this segment and will be representing Territory St. Maarten/St. Martin in the upcoming District 81 Speech Contest in Curacao in October, 2016. In the Humorous segment, the contestant was given 5-7 minutes to give a speech and was judged against time. Mrs. Olga Mussington-Service won this segment and will also be representing Territory St. Maarten/St. Martin in the upcoming District Speech Contest. Amongst fellow Toastmasters and guests, Division Director Ms. Magdeleine presented contestants with a Certificate of Participation and awarded the winners a trophy. She further stated “our Toastmasters gave an outstanding performance during the Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contest and we look forward to supporting them when they represent Territory St. Maarten/St. Martin in the upcoming District 81 conference”.
