St. Dominic High School Achieves 82% IB Diploma Rate for May 2016 Examination Session.

stdominicibstudents06072016PHILIPSBURG:--- On July 5, 2016, St Dominic High School, the first government subsidized International Baccalaureate (IB) school in the Caribbean received its examination results for the Diploma Programme.

This year 82% of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates of St. Dominic High School fulfilled the requirements to be awarded the internationally recognized IB Diploma. They join a community of 1,493,820 Diploma Programme graduates in 136 countries across the world.

Manaar Mohammed and Mohit Nebhwani scored the highest with a cumulative score of 38 points each out of a possible 45. Four students achieved a perfect score of 7 in the following subjects:
Business Management HL- Mohit Nebhwani and Talia Schaminee
Spanish B HL – Yerande Sanchez and Wesley Sint Jago

Mrs. Gianne Wilson-DeWeever, the School Manager stated: “I congratulate not only the students for their perseverance over the past two years, but the teachers and parents for their continued support. Having the IB Diploma Programme curriculum is a key component in helping St. Dominic High School live its mission to provide a holistic education to students who will become critical thinkers, open minded, reflective doers, good communicators and global ambassadors.”

According to information on www.ibo.org, nearly 150,000 students around the world sat the May 2016 exams, with students achieving an average diploma score of 30.07 and 146 attaining a perfect score of 45 points. The St Dominic High students who received the diploma achieved an average score of 28.12 which is in line with the global mean.

Dr. Siva Kumari, the IB General Director, expressed the following:
“Independent research confirms that the IB improves students’ academic achievement, as well as their probability of high school graduation and college enrolment, and it is clear that our students are better prepared to succeed in post-secondary settings. And, perhaps more importantly, they’re better prepared to contribute in helping to make the world a better place.
Along with our schools, we at the IB are proud of the outstanding calibre of our graduates. Beyond that, the IB is a community which holds together beyond each of our individual schools, and many of this session’s graduates will continue to interact with our community, as, together, we face the challenges of the coming years.”

The IB Diploma Programme, offered at St. Dominic High School since August 2010, is a rigorous pre-university curriculum where students select and study six subjects from five groups – literature, foreign language, individuals and societies, experimental sciences, mathematics. In order to qualify for the diploma, students must complete the following core requirements: a 4,000 word Extended Essay (EE), the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course which examines how knowledge is acquired and the various kinds of knowledge that exists, Creativity, Action Service (CAS) requiring students to engage in the arts, sports and the community. The Diploma Programme is designed to not only challenge a student academically but personally and socially as well in order to give them the skills to be successful contributive citizens and members of our global community.
