Police Searches Secondary School.

PHILIPSBURG:--- On Tuesday at approximately 8:30a.m. a special police team carried out a search the Sint Maarten Vocational School in Reward. The search was done on the request of the management of that school based on information that students of that school were either using drugs, dealing drugs or in the possession of weapons. The search was carried out on the school premises where all schoolbags were searched. At the same time the school premises was patroled by the Police K-9 team. During the search some firecrackers, a box cutter and a small amount of marijuana was found. The goal of this search is to regain a drug free, weapons free school and also to regain a feeling of security at school. None of the students were arrested during the search; however one student was taken to the Philipsburg police station to be reprimanded about his conduct. The 15 year old student in question, on Saturday January 24th pushed a female police officer, used profanity towards her and ran away. The mother of this student was called to the police station and she was informed about her son's behavior. The student was severely reprimanded by the Community Police Officer of the Reward area, in the presence of his mother concerning his behavior and then released in her custody.

SUSPECT IN HOME BREAK-IN ARRESTED BY POLICE

On Tuesday at approximately 8:00a.m. several police patrols responded to a call stating that a well-known young man who is responsible for numerous break-ins in the Ebenezer area was seen by witnesses breaking into a home in that same area. During a search of the area by the investigating officers they were informed by concerned citizens, that a group of young men possibly students, was seen running from the area and trying to hide in the nearby gutters. While searching the gutters a group of young men, one fitting the description of the suspect, was seen hiding behind a house. Before the officers could reach the young men in question they took off running in different directions. A foot pursuit started during which a warning shot was fired by police in order to force the suspects to stop, however the suspects continued fleeing. The main suspect was seen running into the bushes nearby. As the officers continued their pursuit they saw the main suspect running into a home. The officers went to the home where the spoke to the female resident of that home. The main suspect was arrested shortly after. The 18 year old suspect was taken to the Philipsburg Police Station where he remains in custody for further investigation. No one was injured during this pursuit.

FEMALE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

On Tuesday at approximately 9:45a.m. the police traffic department was sent to Link One to investigate a traffic accident between a female cyclist and a car and whereby the cyclist suffered serious injuries. On arrival at the scene the victim had already been treated by paramedics and then transported to the Sint Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. The 46 year old victim was immediately operated on for the severity of her wounds. According to the results done by the investigating officers the victim was riding her bicycle from the round about on the Cole Bay Hill towards the One TeTe Loke round about, while the motor vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction. In the corner in the vicinity of Chopin road, the victim, for unknown still reasons lost control of her bike and collided with of the oncoming traffic and then falling to the ground. The drive of immediately stopped his vehicle to avoid riding over the victim. The victim luckily was wearing a helmet which definitely helped in saving her life. This case is still under investigation by the traffic department.
The police department strongly recommends that all cyclists wear a helmet while operating a bicycle, motorcycle or scooter. The life you save might be yours.
