Minister De Weever sheds light on Coliseum Casino issue.

GREAT BAY:--- The Minister of Public Health, Social Development & Labour Cornelius De Weever is fully aware and has been addressing the situation involving the Coliseum Casino and the associated employees. It is important to note that an arrangement was made with all parties through the involvement of the Labour Department since AUGUST to continue the monthly salary of the 12 employees until a solution has been realized.

"Financial and employment arrangements were made to keep the employees on for a bridging period," said Minister De Weever.

The minister in an attempt to attain an appropriate solution in this matter ensured that the Labour Department had discussions with parties involved. After discussions with the employees and management Mrs. Dros-Richardson briefed the Minister of Public Health, Social Development & Labour, who concluded that because of the complexities of the case and the new regulations of employment agencies a more in depth analysis of the case is warranted. It is for this reason that the minister has given the Mediator – Mr. R.A. Boasman this assignment.

Minister De Weever mentioned that it is extremely important that all parties and union leaders are honest and substantiate their statements made to the media. "Should they not have the complete story they can contact my cabinet instead of making assumptions and misinforming the public," said Minister De Weever.

"In addition it is important to protect the confidentiality of our clients as well as companies and/or individuals who they are in dispute with. Also the confidentiality of our clients who have been offered legal assistance by our ministry. Legal assistance can still be provided if and when needed upon request."

Once this research is completed, the Mediator will make recommendations as to how the parties involved in this current situation can be resolved. The Minister would also like to remind the general population, and especially the operators of employment agencies, that legislation regulating the do's and don'ts of employment agencies has been enacted and has been enforced as per August 1st, 2013.
