Dr. Igor Gomes Bravio to highlight cervical cancer treatment and procedures.

igorgomesbravio21102012GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- Dr. Igor Gomes Bravio, Gynecology and Obstetrics, will be one of the speakers at the Cancer Conference this week.

The Cancer Conference is being jointly organized by Collective Prevention Services (CPS) from the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, and a number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The conference is being held under the theme: "Cancer and aging, collectively improving our local cancer care and responsibility," is being held from October 26 to the 27 at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel & Casino.

The four areas to be highlighted at the conference are breast cancer, cervical, colon and prostate cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2005, approximately 1.15 million people in the Americas died of cancer, and 480,000 of these deaths were in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Dr. Bravio, who is from San Jose, Costa Rica, completed his specialist medical training in December 2010. He did a surgical masters course in total laparoscopic hysterectomy and advanced laparoscopic procedures, San Francisco, California USA among many other courses.

Dr. Bravio will be giving a presentation on cervical cancer treatment, endometrial and procedures. Local specialist Dr. R. Friday will also be giving presentations on the aforementioned areas.

'Get Checked,' is the Minister of Public Health's campaign to improve public health amongst the population of the country, and the conference is one of the avenues to bring forth awareness within the community.

The conference will focus on sharing information on the specific cancers mentioned above with the objective of developing a strategic plan and approach in registering, managing and monitoring cancers; increased awareness; and new treatments/techniques.

The general public can attend conference activities on Saturday, October 27 from 9.00am to 1.15pm and from 1.30pm to 4.00pm (lunch not included).
