President of Parliament Hon. Drs. Rodolphe Samuel, would like to commend the organizers, comprising of several Non-Governmental Organizations as well as the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, with respect to profiling prominent cancers that impact the wellbeing of Sint Maarten's society.
"Everybody together has a role to play in reducing premature deaths from cancer. The conference is bringing together different stakeholders to chart a way forward and it's a step in the right direction," President of Parliament Hon. Drs. Rodolphe Samuel said on Thursday.
Scientific knowledge, gathered over the years, indicates that at least one-third of all cancer cases can be prevented. Prevention offers the most cost-effective, long-term strategy for the control of cancer.
Healthy diets, particularly diets high in fruits and vegetables, may have a protective effect against many cancers. Regular physical activity combined with normal body weight will considerably reduce cancer risk, particularly for digestive, gynaecologic and breast cancers.
The conference is being held under the theme: "Cancer and aging, collectively improving our local cancer care and responsibility," and is being held from October 26 to the 27 at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel & Casino.
The four areas to be highlighted at the conference are breast cancer, cervical, colon and prostate cancer.
The general public is invited to conference activities on Saturday, October 27 from 9:00am to 1:15pm and from 1:30pm to 4:00pm (lunch not included).
