OPEN REQUEST TO MEET With Radio Station Managers.

E-mail Print PDF
Mr. Sydney de WEEVER,
Inspector Radio Communication / NIB of
Bureau Telecommunication and Post, section Windward-islands.
Mr. Don HUGHES
General manager PJD-2

Dear gentlemen,

Being a professional educator, long term and consummate social-activist, president of a native St. Martin grass-root movement and conscious citizen of this island, I have made it my duty to be a frequent listener to the radio-program 'In the back yard with the young professionals' as well as to practically all other talk shows on the island in the English language.
To those talk-shows in other languages, e.g. Spanish and Haitian-Creole, unfortunately I do not follow, for the simple reason that I have absolutely no clue what they are saying/preaching or possibly even swearing or inciting for that matter.
By the way.
I wonder if the relevant communication authorities and radio-station owners themselves have any clue and can therefore evaluate the contents of these programs which are conducted in 'foreign tongues'.
That this lack of proficiency to understand these 'foreign tongues' can create a very unfair evaluation of the content of these programs, is self-explanatory and is a very interesting topic for future discussion for sure.
In other words, is their a 'level paying field', when it comes to the criteria applied to sanction certain programs ?
After all, all programs should be treated 'equally under the law', I would like to believe, if we are supposed to live in a state of law !
Therefore, allow me at this time, to request your explanation of the reason(s) why the program 'In the backyard....' is no longer on the air and what is expected to happen with the program in the future.
In addition, gentlemen, I am extremely concerned, that at a time when we as a people are facing the most crucial 'cross-roads' and challenges in our modern history, our own St. Martin and Antillean people are absolutely not being offered enough opportunities to express their views on all these matters in the media in general.
This once more justifies the question; '10-10-10' for WHOM ?????
Being exposed to the grass root St. Martin people on a daily basis, I am extremely worried that this lack of freedom of expression is resulting in many of our people developing a sense of being deliberately excluded in their own home.
At the same time, one can not tune in to any radio- or television station, without hearing lots of heated discussions going on in languages foreign- and who knows, possibly even hostile to us.
If ever there was a time to guarantee that there was the unrestricted possibility for the people of this island, as well as other Antillean residents to have first preference to be on every program on a daily basis in order to express their concerns and ideas pertaining to THEIR constitutional future, it is now !
In ending, I would appreciate meeting with you gentlemen and other stakeholders in order to discuss this matter in a very frank and professional manner.
Do not under-estimate that come '10-10-10' we will be exposed to language on radio- and television that would make us 'blush' and turn even blacker that most of us already are, simply because the Dutch tend to enjoy being extremely 'foul-language explicit' and confrontational and then what will we do ?
Remove those shows off the air ?
In that case, better be prepared to pay exorbitant hight legal damages !!!

Looking forward to your kind reponse.

With respect,

--
Leopold James
President SNBF & L'Esprit de Concordia

The fact that a certain program isnt on th air is no excuse to ferment fascism!
You might need to make your point using a different approach in your argument. The problem might lie in the preference of financial profit in the broadcasting industry or maybe its just that certain people are cutting smart deals with the broadcasting co,s to get their program on the air. Yeah and its instinctive to think that someone is insulting your mom when you cant understand the langauge that they speak.

Sounds like you might need to formulate a new indigenious language for the island....sxmranto.. talkamentu ..Sintmarto.. because you dont seem to realize that after x yrs of slavery & colonialism we have lost all clues of our ancestry, culture and a lot of family values in a western lifestyle that seems to have used Sodom & Gomorah as its role model.
Or maybe you are forgetting that the workers at the skyscraper (tower of Babylon) were intentionally driven to confusion by, from one day to another being programmed by The Most High, to be all speaking different languages.

Let me portray a different level of my perspective of such a mentality...we use their cheap labour, their investments, their taxes, their lovely women... but not their languages?
While we cant even trace our african roots or original languages.
.
Lets be logical..its very obvious that if we are a society that consists of people originating from a hundred plus, countries that we are going to be overrun by foreign languages.
And our only resolve is to learn foreign languages to be able to monitor the communication...for better or for worse.

I never been to any University but Im fluent in at least 5 languages thanks to my willingness to mingle with foreighners and learn their languages right here in SXM.
So whenever you are sitting at the bar or in church..mingle and start a conversation with someone from foreign..Mr. James!
We are outnumbered ..in this case we cant beat them.. so join them, educate yourself in these aspects also because if someone like you who is trying to inspire the indIgenious nation, can only understand two Ma*sa language french and English on the most cosmopolitan island in the West Indies or is it The Caribbean or is it The Antilles, like they say in Holland...

Then its your choice not to try to learn other languages.
Thats ok ..your choice, but dont ferment social dissorder by teaching us ignorance..ITS NO EXCUSE

ps, lightskinned folks face turn red when they blush, not black...
darkskinned people dont show skin colour changes when they blush..lol.
Me personally..the blacker the better..say it loud.so gettin blacker than I really am wouldnt be a problem..
All those folks spending thousands to come and blush in our sun. and we scared to blush..WHAT A THING..sounds really indeginious, doesnt it?
SO PLEASE DONT START NO"JIHAD" MY BROTHER..you are a bright person but everyday is school!

Thanks you Mr.James, you make a valid point. I know when Mr. Damisse is promoting one of his many businesses or his friends' businesses , sand see he has a lot of influence over his devoted listening audience.

There should be random monitoring of all forms of media by the regulators, period. Policy needs to be formulated for foreign language broadcasts and someone needs to be responsible for it.

Yes Mr. james, there are many heated political discussions going on in foregin languages. I am like you, I cannot know them all. So let's have some control.
