UNSOLLICITED ADVICE TO MR. HILBERT HAAR.

E-mail Print PDF

‘Humbly thyself, before it is too late...'

Dear Mr. HAAR,

On Saturday, morning May 16, 2009 around 11.00 a.m. I received a telephone call from a young person (gender irrelevant here).
This person was clearly extremely upset about the fact that you had physically abused a lady and showed absolute no remorse, contrition etc.
In a very appealing manner this young person, who I do not know at all, urged me to write you a letter, which is why I now address you.
For the record, whatever is said about my person I, Leopold JAMES do not condone, will not support anyone, who wants to place this issue in a racial context, because it can only result in making the issue and its resolution even more complex.
So, whatever some of your friends at SXM- Private-Eye may want to make belief, this is my position.
Having said that Mr. HAAR, based on the deep sentiments that have become very intense within our community at large, and especially among young people, pertaining to this case, I advise you not to add ‘fuel to the fire' by pressing charges against Mrs. BROWN for ‘trespassing' your office.
In addition, I have very good reasons to believe it to be in your best interest to at the very least, apologize to Mrs. BROWN for having abused her physically.
Any real man should not be find that so difficult.
For the record.
It appears that there is a group of young people out there, who do not plan to accept this situation ‘as is' and therefore do not at all rule out ‘taking matters in their own hands' if you do not resign.
This is the very clear message that was relayed to me by the caller.
Again, although you might want to take it out on me as the messenger, this is the ‘gospel truth' and reason why, out of deep concern, I publicly advise you, in order to prevent this situation form escalating, to at least make a public apology.
In ending, if this episode is not properly addressed, the community can rest assured that it will continue to ‘fester' until such time when it will ‘explode' out in the open.
And with this advice, Mr. HAAR, I rest my case.

Leopold JAMES

Nicely put Mr James and I am glad you make it clear you are not in favor of those who wish to turn this into something racial. I also agree with you that he should not press charges. I would say that apologies might be due from both sides though, him for his reaction and her for her rudeness and poke in the forehead.

Thank you

Hady

Dear Hady ????

Thank for your response.
While in principle I certainly agree with you, there is a fundamental difference in terms of the need/willingness to apologize by any of the persons involved.
One thing for me is sure.
That is, that as EDITOR of a daily news-paper, one 's influence on people's thinking and ACTING, is far and far more reaching than just any individual.
Also, considering the fact, that already the disrespect and abuse of women is so prevalent among our young people, the behavior towards women of an 'opinion'-maker like an editor becomes absolutely critical.
If, an editor in such functions as a role-model displays this type of insensitivity towards women, then in fact he is setting the example for our young people to follow suit.
This is unacceptable to me and many other people, including parents, teachers, women organizations, etc.
As an editor, Mr. HAAR should be subject to a HIGHER set of standards, than in this case Mrs. BROWN, even if she was 'wrong'.
Therefore in my opinion, Mr. HAAR should act like a man and take all relevant and 'apparently' irrelevant aspects of this case into consideration and take away the serious 'questions' many people have about him.
He can do so, by taking the INITIATIVE to apologize.
This should NOT necessarily has to be done as any admission of guilt.
However, because he should be sensitive and intelligent enough to apologize for at least being PART of an issue that has enormous social and racial implications for this island and the region.
But of course, who am I Leopold JAMES to lecture this gentleman ?
Time will tell if 'an ounce of prevention still is better than a pound of cure..'.

I also sent this on SXMPE. But I am not sure they will have the balls to post it:
I listened to the interview with HAAR yesterday on Eddie Williams show and he was so careful to avoid the matter even though Eddy tried to lead him in that direction. He did the right thing or he would be stumbling with lies on live radio. One interesting comment he made is when he said he was invited to the USA by a friend who told him he do not need a green card because he is white. An offer he gladly took. So was he living and working there illegally? This comes to show the type of racist friends he keeps and the type of person he is. Probably he is working here without a working permit too. If he is, I am sure it will be fixed as soon (or if) my comment is posted (on (SXMPE). On the other hand, I doubt you (SXMPE) will post this because you will go out of your way to protect this man. So you'd better call him and confirm he has a work permit before and if you post this.

And Hady, Lisa only pushed him after he poked her in her face and then punched her. He lied about her touching him anytime before or after. You were not there to witness. So stop using his lies. I know you and flipper will defend him to the most even if he is wrong. This is not right.

What Hady (Haar's wife) should talk about is the fact that she went back to the Today's after HAAR's arrest to convince the staff to make false report and withdraw precious reports. The people should know this. Want proof?

To
Interview on Eddy Wiliam's Show,

If you have proof, you should publish it, otherwise this will be a false accusation.

Meanwhile, although I will not 'hold my breath on that', hope for his own best will, that Mr. HAAR be be big enough to humble himself and apologize for his action, regardless whether Mrs. BROWN also should, or should not to the same.
As editor his impact on our society is much higher and therefore he should be held to a higher standard than Mrs. BROWN.,
If he refuses, which should be no surprise, knowing his mental faculties, any future position of the TODAY newspaper on domestic violence etc, will be simple INCREDIBLE and therefore completely IRRELEVANT...at best.
In that case I will no longer buy a TODAY news-paper.
Time will tell.

Mr Leopold James, once again, you came to the rescue as the mouth piece of those who are speaking, but are speaking in whispers. We should take this into into our hands to assist Mr Leopold James in his fight for justice against people(not color) who believes that they can do anything to anyone and not at least show an ounce of respect or remorse.

Mr Haar you have abused people to long, and remember there is only one God, so that position is already taken so you can take your resume and your fast hands and stick it.

Hi Charisben,

Thanks for your kind words, which are certainly appreciated by me, although I have been ridiculed, threatened and what have you for speaking out at my own risk since I came back to the place of my birth and generational roots, from the Netherlands in 1981.
Finally, many people are realizing that I was a messenger speaking for many, who were too intimidated to speak for themselves.
It is more than time, that people realize that, if they do not stand up, speak out and be counted, 'others' will do that for them, too often not in their favor, to say the least.
In the case of Mr. HAAR, I do not want to 'take sides' beciase I do not lnow all the details of what transpired.
However, I feel as an editor of a daily newspaper, Mr. HAAR has a very special responsibility, based on the power to influence, if not manipulate public opinion.
Therefore, from that vantage point, editors function as a sort of 'role-model' for the community in terms of how to think, behave and act.
So, even if Mr. HAAR is 'innocent as a lamb', just in order to take away the slightest negative impression, he could take the initiative to apologize for being part of this incident.
In the event, Mr. HAAR shows that HE is too big to humble himself and to apologize, he should bear the consequences of such.
In ending, this all goes to show, that if we as 'Friendly Islanders' do not make clear to ALL 'newcomers' what is what, they will take our natural hospitality for granted and return it to us with disdain, hostility and arrogance.
Food for thought,

Leopold JAMES

A couple things.

Men like u, haar makes me madddd, I will roll up to you when I see you any where in public and deal with this once and for all. This will be for all the women in SXM. My unpaid advise - LEAVE SXM A.S.A.P.

This is a threat to inflict violence upon someone, to take justice, or perceived justice into the commenter's own hands. This is exactly what I was writing about, I find it disgusting and low life, I don't think SMMN should publish such comments.

Secondly, to the idiot, because clearly you must be, who thinks I am Haar's wife and the other idiot who thinks they have 'figured it out' that I am anti SXM, let me explain something simply for you. You are clueless and far off target on both counts, what are you smoking?

Anti SXM? Perhaps you should go read some of the blogs I have written on SXM PE.

http://www.sxmprivateeye.com/blog/196

I've written about history, I've written about environment, I've written about and exposed corruption and I have opposed the New Status almost exactly the same as Leopold has. I guess because I have written 'bad' things about sxm politicians and public figures then I must be anti sxm eh? Really, your logic circuits are fried, get help.

In fact Leopold and I agree on many things, in particular that the government system and our politicians are mostly dysfunctional, corrupt and not ready to run a country, it needs restructuring and a clean up. We have one main sticking point and it is that I consider anyone with citizenship, no matter where they are from, to be equal, whereas he would like protected and special status for those who pass his qualifying tests and requirements as 'indigenous.'

I even agree mostly with his view on Haar, that the whole situation would be better served if he did make an apology of some kind for lashing out as he did and that he does have an example to set. But I want to point out something. When SXM PE revealed white supremist Bodo Muth's very racist and disgusting website it was Haar that wrote a whole bunch of articles in the Today and followed it up several times. His coverage helped to close Muth down and drive him off the island.

The racist mud slinging and threats are unwarrented and dangerous, he was wrong to react as he did, even if provoked, but there are a few who would like, for whatever reason, to inflate it and 'make an example of him' as one comment stated.

I have to say, it's up to the level headed and moderate people in here to help moderate comments.

I'm not posting on here to create animosity and conflict with other commenters, I am trying to engage in discussion and debate. There are very smart and thoughtful people here, and there are also a few idiots. Sorry, but it's true, and clearly it is not a racist opinion because I haven't a clue and nor do I care what color those people are, it has nothing to do with my opinion.

Now, if only some of these people would pay attention to the real important issues going down on the island, the ones that will really effect their and their children's future. Why don't some of you ask what Safe Haven is doing to combat domestic violence, we only seem to hear from them when someone they know is involved. How about asking them if they plan to replace all those rotting falling down signs around the island. And while at it, ask them how many women they are helping and have helped and what they do with the 10,000 nafs or so they get every month. I would like to know if we, the taxpayers, get value for money.

In terms of domestic violence on the island, this case is minor league and really, in my opinion, sad and unfortunate.

Hady
