The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams attended the opening ceremony of the Sister Basilia Center on Thursday Evening. The new Day Care facility has been tailor made to fit the specific needs of the clients of the Sister Basilia Center. The Prime Minister attended the opening with the Governor of St. Maarten His Excellency Governor Eugene Holiday and the Minister of Health and Social Welfare Dr. Cornelius de Weever.

The Prime Minister commented that over a year ago she had expressed her wishes for a speedy completion of the Daycare Center of the Sister Basilia Center, and today all gathered to celebrate its completion.

"It is fitting considering that the motto of the Sister Basilia center is "always moving forward" and indeed the opening of this professional center goes to show that the Center is indeed moving always forward with this new and important facility. It is extremely good to be here now at this opening and on behalf of the government of St. Maarten I would like to say thank you for offering the possibility of a rich life for the disabled people on St. Maarten. And to the clients of the Center you should be extremely proud to have this new building as part of your facilities," stated the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister continued by mentioning that studies which were conducted on St. Maarten several years ago have shown that for many persons there was no facility which allowed for the disabled to be cared for in a professional way. "We have fought very hard to overcome the taboo which was on St. Maarten regarding the disabled and the acknowledgement that professional care is extremely necessary. It is through the efforts of countless volunteers and particularly through the White and Yellow cross that we have crossed that threshold as a people. Now the clients of the Sr. Basilia Center and their families are proud to see what our disabled family members can do and that there is now a possibility for them to do it. This Center is a feather in the cap of all who were involved in the process of developing it. This is not only a milestone for the Sister. Basilia Center, but also for St. Maarten and St. Maarten people," stated the Prime Minister.

"The Government of St. Maarten, under the motto of Working for the People, and I would like to add to that "Working for all of the People", is extremely glad with this other step in terms of working for all of the people of St. Maarten. Working for all the people means that all conditions are there which allow for all people, including those who are disabled, to prosper. The White and Yellow Cross Board and Staff and the staff of the Sister Basilia Center are at the forefront of ensuring that the most vulnerable in our community are cared for.
