Arrindell calls on the nation to take a stand against elder abuse.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Friday June 15 marks the first United Nations (UN) World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the Health and Human Rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community.

It was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, who first established the commemoration in June 2006.

The day represents one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.

Elder abuse, like domestic violence and child abuse, comes in many forms. It has been recognized by experts as a public health crisis for which there are no socio-economic borders.

"On this day, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let us as a nation reflect on our elders and also raise awareness amongst members of our community of the various types of abuse to which older individuals are subjected.

"Let us take a stand against elder abuse and take a stand for dignity and respect of our elders," President of Parliament Hon. drs. Gracita Arrindell said on Friday.
