CPS calls on men to attend Friday lecture on diabetes.

GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- Collective Prevention Services (CPS) of the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, is calling on the male population to attend the St. Maarten Lions Club lecture entitled, "Men and their Diabetes."

The lecture will take place at the Belair Community Center on Friday, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

As men's health is identified on the Calendar of Health Observances, it is an opportunity for men to attain as much information as necessary but also to build networks in their approach to ensure a healthy lifestyle and to mitigate diabetes as much as possible and if not for them, think about your family members and friends.

Diabetes is an epidemic in the world as incidence of this devastating disease has doubled in the past 30 years, according to a report in the Journal Circulation, and the biggest jump is diabetes diagnosis was among men.

The risk for type 2 diabetes climbs after the age of 45, although the disease is showing up in younger people.

The risk factors for type 2 diabetes include: being overweight or obese; a sedentary lifestyle; a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates and low in fiber and whole grains; a history of type 2 diabetes in your immediate family (mother, father, sister, or brother).

Having diabetes, in turn, increases the danger of heart disease, as well as a range of problems associated with impaired circulation, such as eye disease and nerve damage.

Information helps you make informed decisions; cope with the demands of living daily with a complex chronic disease; make changes in your behavior that supports your self-management efforts and improve outcomes.

All people with diabetes and those at risk of diabetes, no matter where they live, have the right to learn about diabetes, how it can be prevented, how it can be managed effectively and how to access educational and clinical resources for the betterment of your lifestyle.

The Lions Club has teamed up with the Diabetes Foundation of St. Maarten to bring awareness to men about diabetes with respect to the lecture on Friday evening.

All men are encouraged to attend and bring along a family member or a friend.
