MARIGOT: --- The Commandant of the Gendarmerie Stephan Basso and General Thierry Renard urged the scooter rider that deliberately hit down a gendarme on Sunday evening to surrender and ask for an apology. The two law enforcement heads told reporters at a press conference on Monday that a group of about 30 motorcycle riders was riding on Rue de Hollande heading towards the round-about in Bellevue when one of the riders deliberately hit down the 52-year-old gendarme and dragged him about two to three meters away. The group of riders proceeded to the Dutch side and did not turn back except for two of them but they too did not stop and offered the injured gendarme any assistance.
Commandant Basso and General Renard said St. Maarten and St. Martin goes by the slogan the “Friendly Island” and as such if that is indeed the case then the culprit will surrender, if not the cooperation of their Dutch counterparts will be requested to hunt down the suspected rider and the others who were part of the motorcade. Adding that while this unfortunate has left a husband and father of two severely injured the controls will be intensified in the coming days.
