MP La Ville Apologizes to Parliament and Colleague for his Behavior.

membersofparliament12062012Philipsburg:--- Member of Parliament Romaine La Ville apologized to Parliament on Tuesday morning as well as to his colleague MP Jules James and the people of St. Maarten for making verbal threats against MP Jules James. La Ville said he disappointed Parliament with his behavior also the youths and their parents when he expressed his anger against his colleague Member of Parliament Jules James. La Ville further said that "things were said by him" and he holds full responsibility for what he said to MP James. He said sometimes when one is angry "heated" they say things that they often regret. La Ville said after sitting and thinking about what he said to his colleague he felt he passed a bad shadow over parliament. La Ville said he intended to speak to MP James after the public meeting in order for them to move forward. He said that in the heat of the discussion, words were said that did not have any meaning and he hopes that the Members of Parliament would accept his apology.
In reaction to the statements made by La Ville, Member of Parliament Jules James said he accepts La Ville's apology but on Monday night he felt threatened when La Ville told him multiple times that he was going to shoot him and kill him. MP James said that he has a life and he also does things outside of Parliament and should something happen to him there is a record showing that he was threatened by La Ville. MP James also confirmed that he went to the Police Station and he filed an official complaint against La Ville and even though he accepts La Ville's apology "the clock has turned and whoever has to be called in as the investigation takes place will be called in." MP James said he does not think that anyone should be walking around with a gun, especially an un-licensed one, and making threats to a fellow colleague for statements he made on the floor of parliament.
Member of Parliament George Pantophlet in response to MP James statements said that while MP La Ville apologized to Parliament and his colleague MP James. MP James got up and said he accepted the apology but also went into details on what transpired during the argument on Monday. MP Pantophlet said that statements made by MP James were not called for because if he accepts the apology and then turns around and makes those statements then in his opinion MP James was trying to make things worse. MP Pantophlet also indicated that he is disappointed because MP James is not only a Member of Parliament but he is also considered to be a brother in church. MP Pantophlet said if one wants to talk about forgiveness and they want to use the bible they have to accept it as is. However, he felt that the additional statements made by MP James will instigate more problems. "The good colleague of mine also knows that he has issues with the workers at Pelican and we do not know what could happen with one of the workers of Pelican. Therefore, I think it was very wrong for MP James to make the statements he made on the floor of Parliament."
Member of Parliament Dr. Ruth Douglas also expressed her views on the incident. MP Douglas said that people need to measure their words when they speak. She said since the installation of Parliament there has been a lot of childish behavior and people are using a lot of bad words. MP Douglas said whatever someone cultivates over the years becomes their character and it will come out one day when there is a heated moment. MP Douglas told her colleague Jules James that when someone accepts an apology they also must forgive. However, when you feel that your life is in danger then you have to let others know about it. MP Douglas said she knows the feeling when one's life is being threatened because when she got divorced and her ex-husband threatened her she could not go anywhere. MP Douglas admonished her colleagues in Parliament by informing them that they are the examples of what the future will be and how they behave in private is what comes out in public.
Member of Parliament Louis Laveist said he concurred with the statements made by his colleague MP George Pantophlet and he also accepted the apology of MP La Ville. Laviest said he felt that it was time for Parliament to move forward with the people's business. Laveist said that whatever happened on Monday should now be placed behind everyone and considered it as "water under the bridge."
However, Member of Parliament Sylvia Meyers said some of the Members of Parliament have forgotten who they are, she said she accepts the apology given by La Ville to Parliament. However, she is of the opinion that Parliament is not set up for everyone. "Some of us need to grow up and set an example and we need to look at others who were in Parliament years before us and stop our childish behavior." MP Meyers said she did not have any intention to stand on the floor of Parliament and bash anyone, but because of what transpired on Monday she suffered slightly. When she read the comments on SMN News, she became a "female dog" from someone who does not even know her because she went as a witness with MP James to the Police Station Monday night. MP Meyers said that people don't know the real Sylvia Meyers and they are talking things without having the facts about Sylvia Meyers and her family. MP Meyers said the same person who called her a female dog went on to say things about her son. MP Meyers made clear she has one biological son who is a hardworking individual and he never fought with MP La Ville. "There was never an issue between my son and La Ville and I am saying to the people out there who are reading and writing these blogs to be very careful and stop listening to others who don't know anything about her background. If these people want to say anything about Sylvia Meyers they should say the truth and not any hogwash. These comments I read it with my own eyes and even though my colleagues may not like what I said, this is just the beginning and we are all learning by example."
The Chairlady of Parliament Gracita Arrindell said she also accepted La Ville's apology and as they continue to build history of St. Maarten's Parliament what transpired on Monday and Tuesday will also be part of it. Arrindell said everyone has the right to act how they want to act outside of Parliament but based on article 65 of the Country's constitution, Members of Parliament and Ministers who participate or deliberate in meetings may not be prosecuted for the statement or statements they make on the floor of Parliament.
It should be noted that the argument began in the House of Parliament and ended up outside.
