SMMC has only One Surgeon on Duty --- Hospital Personnel Questioning Death of Jamaican Stabbing Victim.

Philipsburg:--- Patients that are awaiting surgical operations at the Sint Maarten Medical Center and are patients of Doctor Roy Rajaran would have to wait much longer to solve their medical problems because Dr. Rajaran walked off of the job two weeks ago. The only surgeon that is currenty working at the SMMC is Dr. Holiday.
SMN News has been reliably informed that Dr. Rajaran walked out of a meeting when medical professionals at the St. Maarten Medical Center questioned some of the procedures he used on one of the most recent stabbing victims who subsequently died at the St. Maarten Medical Center. Sources at the St. Maarten Medical Center said medical personnel and doctors met two weeks ago to discuss the death of a Jamaican national who died at the institution with severe stab wounds. According to one source, Dr. Holiday posed some questions to Dr. Rajaran regarding procedures used on the victim and Dr. Rajaran took the questions as though there were accusations and walked out of the meeting despite his colleagues pleading with him not to leave until the matter is resolved. The source said Dr. Rajaran and Dr. Holiday had a heated argument about the death of the victim who was stabbed in Sucker Garden.
It is further understood that the surgeon on duty Dr. Rajaran cut open the victim in the emergency room rather than taking him to the operating room where more medical tools and life saving equipments are located.
SMN News further learnt that dr. Rajaran did not return to work since the incident and his patients that were scheduled for surgery had to be rescheduled until further notice.
It should also be noted that while Dr. Rajaran is a Surinamese he was trained in one of the best trauma centers in the Netherlands. However, it is clear that Dr. Rajaran is not able to take criticism even though he knew he might have made a medical mistake when dealing with the 52 year old Jamaican who passed away two weeks ago. SMN News further learnt that Dr. Rajaran has been in contact with the SMMC Director Dr. George Scott who granted him medical leave since the incident.
Health professionals at the St. Maarten Medical Center said that government and the Inspectorate of Health need to take a serious look at the management of the St. Maarten Medical Center. They said that almost every time the St. Maarten Medical Center makes the news it is in a negative light. One medical professional said that Dr. Scot is the Sheriff and Deputy of the Hospital because of the number of caps he is wearing while no one can discuss with the Chairman of the Board Clarence Richardson. Efforts made to reach the medical director Dr. George Scot and Dr. Holiday by phone proved futile. SMN News also tried reaching the medical inspector Dr. Earl Best Monday evening but he too could not be reached.
