Decision of Health Minister triggers several questions.

williammarlin24122009Philipsburg:--- Leader of the National Alliance, Member of Parliament William Marlin, said on Thursday, that the decision taken by Health Minister, Dr. Cornelius de Weever, has triggered several answers that require immediate answers.
When reading the decision the Minister has taken to retract the mandate of the signing powers given to the head and interim head of the Social Affairs Department, one would think that the Minister was just appointed and immediately took control of the situation.
For several months now the faction of the National Alliance has been complaining to the Minister, repeating the cries coming from the public. It appeared as if most people receiving social aid were being taken off the list; physically and mentally challenged persons and many senior citizens. Too many have been the complaints of persons who went to collect the few guilders they get every month, only to be told that nothing was there for them. They were told to check with the Social Welfare Department, and when arriving there, they would be given a letter with a decision that was taken, sometimes, two months ago, advising them that because of their financial situation they have been removed from the list.
When this issue was raised in a meeting of Parliament with the Minister, his answer was, that he was following the law and that he had a responsibility to spend the tax payer's money wisely.
Now that the complaints have hit home and are reportedly causing some heavy discussions among the coalition partners, as some family members close to the assistant to at the least one other Minister, Minister de Weever is finally "hearing the cries of the people". Was he not listening all these months? Did he believe that the poor people were fabricating stories that they had been removed from the list of Social Aid recipients? Did he not take the complaints from Members of Parliament seriously?
But without giving any explanations whatsoever, the Minister discloses that he has decided to retract the mandate. Instead of taking full responsibility as the Minister in charge, Minister de Weever is trying to make it look like he had no idea at all what had been going on all along, and that just the other day he found out that the head and interim head of the Social Welfare Department have been doing wrong or illegal things.
For the sake of Good Governance and Transparency, the Minister should come out and explain to the general public, what exactly it is that these civil servants have been doing wrong, that forced him to act by retracting the mandate.
What rules and our regulations and policies have they been violating or not carrying out? What are all those persons who have been removed from the list to do now? Will they all be placed back on the list? Will they have to re-apply for social assistance? Will the Minister now personally scrutinize every request? Will the civil servants now be removed from their posts, or will they be relieved from certain duties.
You see, we fail to believe that the civil servants in question have been acting all these months on their own without the blessing and knowledge of the Minister. The civil servants in question had to be following policies and guidelines approved by the Minister.
Now that the pressure started coming from within, the Minister played politics and passed the blame entirely to the civil servants. Worse yet, he placed the blame squarely in their laps. And to prove to the public that he is on their side, the Minister has decided to punish them, by taking away their signing authority.
We publicly call on the Minister to provide a complete picture to the public of St. Maarten, failure to do so, will make his decision just seem like another political move, played with the people of St. Maarten, some of who have had to suffer for months now.
While the National Alliance is happy, that hopefully now the suffering of many people will come to an end, we call on the Minister to take full responsibility for what was done to all these persons over the past months.

William Please leave Connie alone.
Give him a chance his hands was tied at the beggining.

With the dictatorship that is going on.

I'm a full pledge N/A
Connie is doing well, some of us may not like some of his drastic changes.
But in the end it will be for the better for all of us.

The UP/DP gouverment have put a bitter taste in my mouth.
but that dont mean I'm going to redecule what Connie is doing now for St.Maarten and it's people.

He is on the right track and I think you Mr.Marlin should help him.

That is my two cents

I do not believe this man. Are you for real Mr. Marlin?.

You were there and you did nothing to correct the situation. Don't even try to pull this stunt now. You are making yourself look really stupid and childish.

Give it a rest will you.

Like Backing N/A I am also a full fledge NA and it is deep in my DNA but I have to give Minister de Weever the credit for having the balls to take some of the decisions he has taken. He is only cleaning up the mess even to say cesspool that he inherited.

The former DP crew were only taking care of their own people while non-DPers were left hanging. Right now everyone can have a fair chance and needs to be treated with dignity. I trust that the other ministers will follow suit and demand that civil servants in their departments give similiar respectful service to the community and show no particiality, treating all persons with the same respect.

WM what did you do you do for department when you were in Government? Zippo, so hush up and leave minister Corny alone. Go back to Curacao where you were born and went to school. You know what, I know your NA has a disease to ask questions, see if you all in NA can find a cure for it now. Do good, Questions from NA, Do bad, again questions from NA. What is it you want NA. Climbing in through the back window again to be in government. Ask questions about all the appointments you did just before leaving office. Each and every council that was instating carry only NA folks. Shame on you. Stop throwing stones because you live in a gla*s house. Your appointments for governor and acting governor, we all know they are NA backers and they were suggested to the Kingdom for appointment in their function. We all know of the appointment of then Lt. Governor D. Richardson, wasn't it not also your candidate when you were in government and suggested him to the crown. Now do not make fools out of people as I know and others know how these appointments took place. I am no johnny come lately like many who do not know how these things work. I grew up and was born here on the island from Antillean parents and not imported, so I know how it works. Tell your stories WM of the NA to the johnny come lately. smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif

Unlike you MP Marlin, The Minister does not have to play politics. He was not elected, neither was he on any political slate. He was choosen for this position because of his qualifications and should be again appointed to this position/part of Govt. after next elections, no matter which party is in Govt.

I will, at this time, answer the questions posed by MP Marlin that even a school child could have figured out the answers to ... at this time.

Q. What rules and our regulations and policies have they been violating or not carrying out?
A. Yours (Govt's) MP Marlin ... The same ones that were in place when your party was in Govt. 2009/2010.

Q. What are all those persons who have been removed from the list to do now?
A. Wait for further instructions.

Q. Will they all be placed back on the list?
A. Nope.

Q. Will they have to re-apply for social a*sistance?
A. Yes, if so required to insure that they do qualify. Depending on the proof in their files they could also be re-instated without having to re-apply.

Q. Will the Minister now personally scrutinize every request?
A. No, no need to. He has his cabinet who are competent and trustworthy, understand/respects his decisions and instructions and will insure that all is running smoothly and update him accordingly.

Q. Will the civil servants now be removed from their posts?
A. No. (not yet, pending further investigation)

Q. Will they be relieved from certain duties?
A. If so required.

Any further questions MP Marlin?????

If not, I would now like you to answer just 1 question:
Why was the parliamentary meeting ref. MP James cancelled by your faction.???????

THAT is what the people wants to and needs to know.

QUOTE:
National Alliance (NA) has submitted a new request for a Parliament meeting to examine the lawfulness of Member of Parliament (MP) Jules James voting on an NA motion that specifically had named him.

The new request was submitted two days after NA requested that a pending meeting on the same subject be cancelled due to an illness in the NA "family."

MP Louie Laveist (NA) had told The Daily Herald that the party intended to pursue the matter because James' vote "violates the Constitution and we intend to address it at a later date."
UNQUOTE.

Now, is this the type of leadership we want???
While I have all regards and understanding in cases of illness, was this any reason to cancell such a meeting just because one member was ill???? How serious was this illness and who was ill???

So Mr. Marlin, pls. clean your own house before your comment on someone else'.

Ask questions yes NA, why is the spouse of WM still on sick leave for about 5 years now and still getting her full salary. These are questions that NA needs to pose and let the people know, the so-called fairness for their family members and supporters. the people still want to know why the new government building is not finished as yet. Call a meeting on that and ask who put their hands in the cookie jar and now it cannot be finish. Comunity and tax payers money. I do not hear no questions pose on that subject. It seems for that issue everyone in NA lost their tongue. If so get, try to recover all those tongues that a million questions can be posed concerning that building. Shame on you WM, go cook sous old man. smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif Big actors and jokers NA.

Dear William,

Please enjoy your pension and stop hara*sing yourself for a set of ungratefull people.

You have done all you can already by giving them a self governing entity.

We live in a "free for all island", and that is not going to chanrge for the better anytime soon, as the quality of life is getting worst day by day.

Take care of your family foremost and trust for good health. Your family needs you more than ever, now!

The chicken came home to roost and that's why the mandates were taken away.

By the way, William, we like your Sous and continue to play your cards with the boys.

N.A. can ask all the questions they want. That's part of their job. It only means more transparency for me. Who cares if the questions are necessary or not? They might not for me and you but others might find it interesting.

N.A. is not in charge. UPP/DP is in charge. Let the N.A. do their job. They are good at being in the opposition. They do not makes things pa*sby just like that. The minister is doing a good job! And if he got nothing to hide then he got no worries with whatever questions anyone throw at him.

Keep the good work up Minister de Weever. You got nothing to hide so don't worry, right?

@kel: I can see that your a person with brain and integrity because your comments are straight to the point and very good. Keep up the good job.

I can't say the same for many of the other comments, because those are personal low down attacks on some one who is doing his job whether we like it or not. NA should ask questions, that's their job. But it doesn't take away the fact that minister De Weever is doing an excellent job. He is the only Minister that is doing his job. Wish that all the Ministers were like him. Minister De Weever is cleaning up decades of MESS and its about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

N.A...........3 TERMS by four years = 3x4 = 12 years in and out
U.P D.P= the same goverment = DP

Now minister Boasman from the VVD, when are you going to start locking up St Maarten politicians....when.
And my advise to you is to do it quick, because you wont like us to think of you like how we THINK about Donner and the QUEEN!!!
The QUEEN task is to protect the people, and what you the dutch goverment did nothing. these bloggs helps the St maarten people to speak the truth without loosing there jobs and not being threatened by there goverment officials.

Now Mr BOASMAN- V V D when are you coming to lock them all U.P!............St Maarten people is waiting!!!!!!

Whether or not Min. de Weever's motivation stems from the fact that one of his party or coalition member's families has been touched, it is a motivation that has led him to take a decisive decision. That is something that most commissioners/ministers don't do because they sit and count the votes.
Although Min. de Weever is not a politician, his uncle who lobbied and almost threw down the government to make sure he got the minister post, is a politician, and he needs those votes. If Cornelius de Weever looks good, Leroy de Weever looks good.
Bottom line is, Min de Weever took a bold decision and the position he has taken hopefully will result in better service for ALL the people of this island, regardless of their political ties.

It takes Ministers [and former Commissioners] some time to fully figure out who is genuine and who is not. Civil servants can kiss the rear end of politicians, give them the biggest smile, tell them all they want to hear, and behind the backs of the politicians or when the time is right, those same civil servants will show exactly who is the boss; by doing what they want. That Arneman gentleman should have been removed from his post long time ago. I can recall Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson requesting of him to give clarity on why he had removed a mentally challenged person and others from the list, to put them back on the list, and to have the monies owed to them paid out. To date, that mentally challenged person in particular, has not seen a cent of that money, because Mr. Arneman thinks he is a demi-god and he can do whatever he wants.

Though I fully understand what you are saying, Mr. Marlin, and you are absolutely correct, there is a time and a place for bringing up these matters. Right now Min. de Weever is seen in a very positive light by the people of this island, and to bring up these matters right now, is like having you come over like a 'hater'. One needs to strike the iron while it is hot, but right now it is not. I hope you get my drift.

It would be amiss of me not to mention the following. Indeed Min. C. de Weever is not a politician and he is a professional. Just so, Commissioner Blackman was not a politician and he is an outstanding professional whose track record speaks for itself. Yet, Leroy de Weever crucified him every chance he got. Leroy de Weever made that professional's life a living hell. The DP party was calling meetings EVERY SINGLE DAY in an attempt to keep the government from carrying out its day to day duties. The DP members were not asking 7 questions, but they would come with 250 questions and then proceeded to ask 100 questions for every answer they received.
Today, the Executive Branch of government is separated from the Legislative Branch and as such, the job of the Ministers is much easier than that of the former Executive Council.
It seems that some of you above who made ridiculous statements, purposely have a problem with your short term memory!
