Samuel commends community organizations and personalities promoting Breast Cancer Awareness.

rodolphesamuel27082012PHILIPSBURG:--- President of Parliament Hon. Drs. Rodolphe Samuel, would like to commend all community organizations and personalities who have been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues.

Samuel added that, although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It is also the principle cause of death from cancer among women globally.

Men can also get breast cancer too. Even if the percentage of men diagnosed with male breast cancer is small, it is often more fatal for a large percentage of the men diagnosed.

Since most men don't know to look for it, the disease is usually found after it has progressed to a more dangerous level.

Despite the high incidence rates of women's breast cancer, in Western countries, 89 per cent diagnosed with breast cancer are still alive five years after their diagnosis, which is due to detection and treatment.

The Positive and Elektralyets Foundations will launch the Pink Month of activities at Holland House Beach Hotel on October 5, and the public is urged to wear pink and attend the event according to organizers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that two components of early detection have been shown to improve cancer mortality: education, to help recognize early signs of cancer and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms; secondly, screening programs, to identify early cancer or pre-cancer before signs are recognizable, including mammography for breast cancer.
