University of St. Martin and the Philipsburg Jubilee Library presents a lecture on “The Lost Jews of St. Maarten”.

Philipsburg:--- The University of St. Martin is collaborating with the Philipsburg Jubilee Library to host a lecture on "The Lost Jews of St. Maarten", presented by Mrs. Dana Cohen Sprott. This lecture is one of the events within the country wide Tolerance program in the schools, media and community led by The Anne Frank Stitching, The Philipsburg Jubilee Library, and the St. Maarten Heritage Foundation. A culmination of research on the presence of a Jewish community in St. Maarten that predates the American Revolution, old photographs of the island as well as a historical look at deeds that pinpoint the exact location of the St. Maarten Synagogue from 1783, the Jewish Burial Ground and the stages of facial reconstruction will be showcased. The lecture is scheduled for Thursday October 4, 2012 at The University of St. Martin lecture hall, commencing at 6:30 – 8:00pm.
Lecturer for the evening, Mrs. Sprott has spent the last 20 years in St. Maarten, and it was during her time on the island that she learned that that there might have been a Jewish community here. Using good old fashioned research with the help of the Kadastar's office, Government Affairs, SIMARC and the St. Maarten Heritage Foundation, she located the site of the former Jewish Burial grounds where Radio Shack is located (1740- 1860) and the location Jewish Synagogue behind the West Indian Tavern. She currently lectures at Florida Atlantic University on the Jews of the Caribbean and The Caribbean and WWII.
The general public is welcomed to attend this lecture. There is no cover charge.
