Philipsburg:--- In the Herald of Thursday, August 19, 2010, candidate #18 on the National Alliance list for the elections of September 17, 2010 says "she made the best choice to join the Alliance". If her decision was strictly for immediate gratification and personal gain, the DEMOCRATIC PARTY would have to agree with her. If at any time however, the # 18 candidate on the National Alliance slate had even for ONE fleeting moment considered her own future on St. Maarten and that of her children and her children's' children, she would have realized what a grave mistake she was making. Allowing herself to be "bought" by the National Alliance is not only shameful; it is also against the law! President of the DP, Michael Ferrier, in a Press Release on Monday, August 23, 2010, revealed the following to the press: He and DP Party Leader, Councilwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams visited de Windt at her home on the L.B. Scott Road on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, to invite her to postulate herself as a candidate on the DP list for the upcoming Island Council election. De Windt eventually accepted and agreed to do so, but not before she insisted to tell Ferrier and Wescot-Williams about her disillusion with NA's Councilman Frans Richardson whom she had supported and campaigned for in the January 2010 Federal elections. She said she had become disgusted after Richardson had made many promises to her and her followers, but honored very few after the election was won by him and his party. She also explained in great detail how for the 2007 elections she had supported then DP candidate and incumbent Councilman, Louie Laveist. According to her many thousands of dollars were given to her during that particular campaign in 2007 by Laveist to, as she put it: "take care of things for him" for that election. She claimed that all these shady deals did not sit right with her, being someone who "believes in a Lord above". She agreed to meet with us (the DP) to make a fresh start with the DP, the party that according to her "made it possible for her mother to migrate to St. Maarten years ago to make a living, something the matriarch could not do in her own country, the Dominican Republic". This time, she assured Ferrier and Wescot-Williams that she was on board with the DP with no strings attached. She just needed to have the assurance from the DP leadership that all will be done to assure an improvement in the conditions of the most needy amongst her fellow D.R country men and women, once the DP is back in government. And IF immediate help was available from the DP to a few of these persons truly in need, so much the better. Late last week she agreed to meet DP President Ferrier in Philipsburg to have her official DP photograph taken dressed in a dark suit and a bright red blouse. She beamed with pride to be part of the Democratic Party. After the picture taking session she asked how she could stay in touch with the party, seeing that she did not have a cell phone. Ferrier offered to buy her one and stopped in at TELCEL to do so immediately.

On Tuesday August 17th Ms. De Windt called the DP President with the "breaking news" that NA Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson offered her a car and $20,000 for distribution amongst her "constituents", if she would run on the National Alliance list. She said she defiantly refused the offer adding that "she was not for sale". Ferrier thanked her for her stance and show of integrity. That afternoon she again called the DP President, this time to ask him to critique a speech she had prepared in English that she wanted to give at a "Meet & Mingle" get together the DP was hosting for its candidates and their significant others that evening. Ferrier and another DP member listened to her on speakerphone and congratulated her for the obvious effort she put in formulating the speech. Unfortunately that evening she was a "no-show" and all efforts to reach her proved to be futile. The next morning (postulation day) the DP leadership heard on the news that de Windt showed up as candidate # 18 on the NA slate. The Democratic Party now asks, if the offer of a car and $20,000 did not convince de Windt to join the National Alliance, what did? Could it have been more money? A nicer car maybe? In alluding to the above, Democratic Party Leader Wescot-Williams has on Postulation Day already publically stated that it is lamentable that political parties would exploit the hardships of Dutch citizens on St. Maarten for political reasons. DP President Ferrier added that the stories of vote buying with raw cash by bagmen working on behalf of the National Alliance in the January elections were numerous and plentiful. Ferrier considers this practice, if true, a threat to the democratic process in our Country-to-be. He therefore calls on the competent authorities to be vigilant before and during this crucial election scheduled for September 17, 2010 and goes as far as to ask that independent election observers be invited to St. Maarten to monitor this upcoming election. He calls on the office of the Lt. Governor to urgently issue the rules and regulations that need to be adhered to by one and all to allow the voters of St. Maarten their God given right to cast their vote free form all pressure and in a fair and peaceful manner. Ferrier thinks that prohibiting voters from entering the voting booths with a cell phone or other devices that are capable of taking pictures of how the voter has cast his/her vote, will already be a giant step in the right direction. Additionally, according to the DP President, no party paraphernalia and/or party supporters should be allowed within five hundred meters of any of the polling stations, and this should be strictly enforced by the police.
The National Alliance cannot ignore the fact that when an elected Island Council member accepts the position he/she is elected to in any election, he/she must either promise or swear that he/she has accepted nothing from anyone, or promised any one anything to hold the highest public office in the land. The Democratic Party wonders how this will apply to the NA Candidate # 18, if God forbid she gets enough votes to be elected to public office on September 17th.
In an invited comment Leader of the National Alliance William Marlin urged the president of the Democratic Party to go to the Prosecutor's Office and to file a complaint if he has proof to substantiate his claims.

If thee was an investigation into this issue , then it seems likely that the circumstancial evidence of there being a criminal act would support persueing this matter .
Of course to obtain real evidence would be tough but there seems every reason for the OM to make an effort .

Disgrace, disgrace, disgrace.
Is this what we can expect to be the level of politics in country St. Maarten from the two most senior- and so-called experienced political parties ?
Although I will vote for none of the two, I found Michael sounds to low- and stupid and insulting the the intelligence of the people.
If these are what are the most important issues he can bring up, then God save this land from calamity.
It is also really unacceptable that this kind of horse trading takes place and that foriegn women (prostitutes) can hold the people of this country hostage by demanding AND receiving so much from our own politicians, who will never do that for us.
CPA we need you more than ever.

This saga merely illustrates what our political system is like: attract some of the most unqualified people to run a list, hoping that they deliver votes. And once they do deliver votes, we ignore all principles of decency, good governance and political maturity (just go to the government administration building these days and see for yourself). Little attention is paid to the candidate's background, integrity, education, ethics, professional track-record and/or ability to serve people in elected office.
The very way we conduct politics makes this island look ignorant and backward. The way we conduct politics is illustrative of our lack of understanding about how democracy works. We have allowed money to corrupt our behavior in the political arena; the foremost culprits are the politicians themselves: they act like prostitutes and in the process turn the electorate into prostitutes. We place candidates and political leaders on a pedestal while we are their very bosses. Politicians on St. Maarten stand for nothing, believe in nothing and cannot change in midstream, no matter how hard we pretend that this is possible. Once, we make these jokers accountable for their deeds -- much of the drama will cease. Most of those on lists are among our uneducated, anyhow, and they will never, ever have anything of substance to contribute to governance.

DP is saying here that this lady tells them that she will run only if they would take care of her dominicano people who needs help. I believe she should be running to help Sxm. This is to show you that openly DP and NA are accepting these so call Ducth Sint Maarten at heart on there list while they know they are there to help Santo Domingo not SXM. How can this be permitted. This is not right. Here we see why these people are going on the list for not for SXM they have nothing in heart for SXM. This has help me to make up my mind to vote for CPA even knowing he might not reach no where but at least he is about sxm people.

at Seamus. Maria B is a whaaaaaat? u fool, pls. get your facts straight.

Secondly Maria B does not have to beg like them dominicano's do, please do not try to put them in any cla*s like her. She is a lady who does not need Govt. money to feed her people and she did not have to buy any pa*sport with votes either, "she from right here", just like like you and me.

Some people sicken me. Just because someone has a lighter color than black they from somewhere else.

SXM'rs come in all shades, just like Sarah, Roy, Leroy and Maria (all DP slate) and Sylvia Meyers (NA slate). Guess some people think she is Indian or Guyanese. Heyliger and van Delden UP, guess you thought they Dutch men and Lou Lou (NA slate), guess you all thought he Haitian or African. No people, they all from right here.

So once again, get your facts straight when you want to talk about people you don't know a crap about.

If this is the way we prepare for country st. maarten, then it is time, that either the SHTA, or better yet the nation building group of leopold james, calls the the Dutch Government to stop this election and place the island temporarily under higher supervision.
It is ridiculous that we are held hostage by all kinds of foreign naturalized people, who are paid heavily and actually build their nations here.
it got to stop, because it will cause a revolution.
This criminalization of our election was started and perfected under the blasted DP, followed by the NA and is in the blood of the UP, which is simple a DP-Wathey offshoot.
Stop it.

Where there's smoke, theres fire. This rumor circulated and it finally reached the DP. The school children does get the melee before we do. She can't help, the dominican republic blood runs through her vains. This just goes to show, that no political party is clean. We can actually point a finger to them all, so on sept 17 just vote for the party you believe will be best to take us to country. They bash the DP for years about all kinds of buying and selling votes, but the truth is they always did it also, only now they boldfaced doing it. People talk what you tell them and all parties buy votes. ALLLLLL

IMAGINE, the Party that has thought and trained people for the past 55 years that you should sell or should buy votes, has the heart to go to the media with this crap!! It is the DP who has for the past 55 years, paid light bills, gave blocks, fridges, stoves, then it went up to cash, cell phones, airline tickets and now because they see that they may be in the minority when it comes to votes this election go to the press complaining about the VERY SAME THING they taught the other parties to do!! Try something else Mr. Ferrier! Tell us what contitutional changes you DP has made in the 10 years prior to this goverment did the changes for you and why DP council members walked out of the EC meeting on Monday avoiding to vote on yet another constitutional change for the PEOPLE OF SINT MAARTEN!

I am pretty sure ms. de Windt took the money. Her behavior was bad, despite of which party she choose for, to be on a slate one minute and the next minute on the slate of the opposite party sounds like ms. de Windt is an opportunist. If I were William I would ask her to politely withdraw her candidacy. There is too much controversial surrounding her that might be bad for the NA. One advice to the DP party, just forget that idiot she is not worth it. You should be glad that you saw her true colors now and that you got rid of her. She is probably going to bite NA in the **s when they do not win the election and will try to get close to UP. But I warn them to look out for this wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Woman Power, I agree with your comments. You see, there are many who just landed on St.Maarten and know not what they say.
The mighty DP administration in the past has given blocks, fridges, and many other items for votes. This is a fact. It's kind of Hypicritical for Mr. Ferrier to now bring vote buying to lthe forefront and point fingers. This is a joke, right? Our political history is well documented. People also forget that many persons in the Media were threathend and harrast for voicing or writing an opinion of the mighty DP. You have to know where you come from to know where you are going. Vote buying is wrong from NA, Upp, DP or whoever. some people, voters have no decency.

Poor Hyacinth's salary doesn't come to $4000 a month, so how in the world could he afford $20.000 and a car on his salary. This story sounds like sour grapes by the DP. They lost the woman, now they vex. This will be a very hard fought election, so I guess everyone will be pulling out all the stops, even to stoop as low as Moiky did.
Candidates, keep your moral standards high. In the end you cannot buy a vote for real because no one knows what happens behind drawn curtains.

It is not just about who buying votes it is about the moral of it all and who really is running this country.

1. NA and in particular Mr. W. Marlin spent the past 40 years in opposition claiming how corrupt the DP has always been. What does he do once he gets the opportunity? Yes, 10 times worse than the DP. Just look at the candidates on that slate and look at how he has run the government for the past year. Be honest and tell me that W. Marlin is any better than any of the other politicians he has accused of wrongdoings for all these years.

He is actually worse since he criticized them but went in there to do the exact same thing.

Ref. Hyacinth's salary? No, of course he did not pay her from his salary. The actual (real) leader of Government (and it surely is not Mr. W. Marlin) has the funds and means to give 10 more people cars and the same amount.

Marlin accused DP of selling out SXM. Then please tell me what he is doing right now. Everyone else has more rights than the SXM people right now.

Desgraciado sin berguinsa.

You stupid people, where are the jobs you were promised by your great NA government? How many Chinese supermarkets have hired any local (sxm'rs) as yet? I wonder how many more Dominicano's got free tickets to come in to visit their families right now until Sept. 18 and will stay to work in the Chinese supermarkets? What positive issues are being negotiated for the SXM people?

Mr Ferreir, you all made your bed now lay in it. Dp was the party buying every nation vote here on the island when election time came around. Ms. De Windt has the right to join any election party of her chioce. You clearly said that she ask you how can she get in contact with the party and you immediately went out and buy her a phone at Tell Cell. (if it was a Blackberry i want one too ferreir)....Shame on you!!! You where the owner of a car company, you should have came up with that idea first do not let Hyacinth R. beat you to it. (if she did get a car,,girl keep it, automobils to not come cheap now a days). Ferreir you should know by now how the ladies loves cars..... The Windt is not going to run with a party that allow Antillians to go home to beg after a three and six months labor contract. She is not going to please a party that allow our government civil servants to carry out corruption in the department. The windt wants to run on a party that is going to work for the people of St Maarten.... Ferreir you sound like a child begging for cookie and milk......Grow up and enjoy the ride!!!!!!!

You supporters out there please keep quiet and let the big boys tackle each other in the way they know how. If you are in NEED of items/materials and can get help from any body/politician or whoever and they are willing to give please take with God blessings on the giver. There are those who are truly in need, who are we to judge them? Some of us need to bash another party member to feel good about ourselves. And personally happy with her choice and I am sure she is too. NA is not buying people votes, but earning them. NA did more work than DP in the past years they was there. We have a government working for us and we bringing them down. Sad. When DP and UP get in there, what will you say? UP the same as DP, green for money. Buying people votes. I happy with NA. One other thing that I can't understand. I don't have anything against Laveist . But How in heaven's sake , an elected official can publicly say that he was offered bribes and doesn't report it to the Prosecutor . To my knowledge attempt to willfully corrupt an elected official is a punishable offense . Can someone help me on this one ?
Or maybe he was waiting , hoping for a better offer ? I always look at Louie as a honest man , a little naive maybe. But this time I can't help but wondering .
