Philipsburg: --- Close to three hundred people from within the community of St. Maarten joined the efforts of the United Task Force Against Crime (UTFAC) in the candlelight march on Saturday night. Among them were several elected officials, namely leader of government William Marlin, Leader of the Democratic Party Sarah Wescot Williams, Island Councilmember Rudolph Samuel as well as members of the business community, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, representatives of the KPSSS in the persons of Chief Commissioner of Police Peter de Witte, and Commissioner of Police Carl John and Acting Lt. Governor Reynold Groeneveldt. As a symbol of hope the marchers carried lighted candles as well as posters highlighting the current crime situation as they slowly and silently marched through the streets. Several bystanders and other onlookers stood alongside Front Street looking at those who opted to make a difference in this once peaceful community.
indians01082010
While the UTFAC campaigned all week to get the community to react to their call to march against the current crime situation, the Haitian community organized their own march in memory of Clemencia Julot who would have celebrated he 22nd birthday today. Members of the Haitian community gathered on Cole Bay Hill look-out point prior to marching towards Cole Bay where they visited Pastor Bell's Church. Supporters and marchers in that march wore Tee -shirt bearing the photo of murder victim Clemencia Julot.
The marchers gathered in front of the Government Administration Building where several speakers delivered short speeches regarding the current crime situation. The UTFAC said based on their research some 22 persons lost their lives to violent crimes during the past ten years. The UTFAC named the persons who lost their lives to crime from 2009 to now, they are Angel Martin, Marco Beaumont, Haresh Dayalani, Mikhail Boasman, David Eustace, Sabila Absalon, Jean Busquet, Eric Yuan Sam, George le Blanc, Lau Wai-Yin, Otmar Leonard, and Clemencia Julot who would have celebrated her birthday on July 31.Reasons why the UTFAC believes something needs to be done to reduce crime.
police01082010
Delivering the invocation and the most powerful and to the point message was Pastor Wycliffe Smith who said that far too often people believe getting solutions to our problems cost lots of monies while the answers are simple. Pastor Smith said one of the first thing that has to be done on St. Maarten to reduce crime is that people here have to begin loving themselves and others if they are to make a difference. He said while the UTFAC and those who came out to march is making a statement each and everyone in the community has a responsibility if crime is to stop. Pastor Smith said currently the people living on St. Maarten has gotten into materialism and they are self centered rather than looking out for their neighbors. He said long gone are the days when doors can remain unlocked. Gone are the days when we trust our neighbors, the values and principles that have eroded over time which is the root cause for so much crime in society, namely murders, robberies, and domestic abuse, blue and white collar crime which are on the increase, not to mention cyber crime. Pastor Smith said the current trend has left one to wonder if there is still hope and if the clock can be turned back to regain the society.
panneflek01082010
Another prime cause for the crime wave Pastor Smith continued by saying people have lost love for each other, they are less tolerant, and on the verge of wanting to fight back. Pastor Smith said that the youths are often blamed but the youths learn from the adults. Adults he said are the ones who teach the youths how to tolerate and to love but in the homes the adults are heard cursing off their children and have failed to listen to their children. Pastor Smith said to make a change the family life has to be restructured. Pastor Smith said adults and elected officials are sending the wrong message to the youths when they legalize moral standards. Prostitution is a moral standard that has been legalized, casino gambling, certain forms of theft have been legalized, and the tolerating of lying. He said to see how much lies are told by adults then one has to visit the court rooms, or even listen to the politicians who have been making empty promises, or maybe one should listen to the island council meetings. He said when politicians choose to live by certain moral standards they are sending a message to the youths. "When politicians or people in high offices think they can get away with things the youths think they too can get away with things." He called on the adults to stop living double standard lives instead people should live right and act right. The message delivered by Pastor Smith caused the gathering to clap and to cheer as they agreed with what he had to say about the adults and the examples they set for their children.
Other speakers include Lenworth Wilson, Lenny Priest, Clarence Richardson, and Acting Lt. Governor Reynold Groeneveldt.

Carl John and Peter de Witte should be out in the districts patrolling catching thieves not walking up frontstreet smiling in front of a camera. They and the elected officials are charged with bringing solutions to crime not walking with those who are complaining what they think people are foolish. When they solve a case they take the praise now things out of hand they dont want to take the blame. One is never too high in the force to go on patrol you swore to serve and protect you did not swear to sit in an office till 5 o"clock.
But then again its man who has done this to life ruined their own life looking to a man because he got some metal piece of button on his shoulder to solve crime, boy oh boy how sad...

I think that the way you people are attacking each other on this blog shows what is happening on ST. Martin, because here you all are giving your comments and coming down on each other, this is the example the young people are seeing and doing, so if we want the young people to do good, we have to start doing otherwise the crimes on this island will continue to get bad and our bad actions are the reasons why, and you know it.

PS: I challenge all you bloggers to start using your own names I do all the time, as you can see. JAH BLESS!!!

To whoever posted about someone being drunk, you obviously was not at the march.
Pastor Smith and Clarence Richardson spoke about people like you, people that have to change their negative ways, people that contribute nothing to society, people that sit on their behind criticizing, and then our children follow your kind and you wonder where they get their ways???? its from people like you!
I must congratulate all the SXM people that came out to the march, it was a uplifting experience.
The people came together to show that we are a community, they came together to tell those we are fed up with criminals and those that harbor them.
We came together to send a message to those that we will not tolerate criminals in our midst, and to those that say we should be alright because we have the same crime as elsewhere-we say NO!
Thank you Inspector Carl John and police chief Witte-your presence was highly appreciated as you are also part of the community.
This march was not to pitch the community against the police-this march was about showing solidarity-joining hands to fight crime as ONE

When i read the comment of those who have not thing good to say about people that are part of this community that are making a diff. i feel sad. Now what did Mr John and Mr Witte and Mr Panneflek done wrong? These good gengleman only came out and show their solidarity by joining hands with the cause of fighting crime on the little island. Am pretty sure the same one making those comments didnt even go to it. Nevertheless there are those kind of people living in the same community. I hope they didnt forget these same three person that they are talking about are the same person who they still need to call on when the same crime happeneds. Maybe to themself. lets stop talking about each other and talk to each other. Food for thought. Memeber 10-10-10 is just around the connor. We can't go into it with a crab way of thinking. Sad day.

I am proud that it had a march for all murdered victims and at the same time extremely mad because the Haittian comunity had there march seperate; then they going to say we Sint Maartiners/Saint Martiners DO NOT like them. They diging themselves in a hole where we Sint Maartiners/Saint Martiners will hate them even more now, I have no probleme with any stranger but when you come here and do not accept something good what we are doing for you or not respecting the law that's what I do not love, because I am sure if we Sint Maartiners/Saint Martiners had to do it in there country they wouldn't be happy to.

Hurrah ! the march was beautiful, the words well said ! And what's next????? How many crimes will this stop??? Come on people wake up now ! The only thing that's left to be done is get on the government to handle the matters professionally! Get proper trainers friom the US to train the police and to show how to eliminate the gangs! The police needs to step up now and of course I can tell you the Brooks accord didn't help this country! Legalize the foreigners but to do what ? Where are the jobs??? Our young people , what do you have to offer them ? To the politicains: what kind of role models are you? Marching won't change a thing! It's just a slow moving jump up session!
Investors, give some of your profits to create jobs for the youth ! Indians, chinese stop bringing in your people to work for a few cents and employ sxm children!!!
The day a march for employment is organized , We the young people will join ma*sively ! STOP THE HYPOCRISY ! It's a rat race in SXM!

I hope you did not wait on this march to realize that haitians are for haitians!!!!!! The haitian community is well organized on SXM! They have their churches, their schools, their buses, their taxis, their grocery shops.......they are creating a lil Haiti in SXM as they do all over the world! And our governmenbts on both sides, do everything to help them in their betterment! Just see how they support Carimi or any other Haitian band when they come here!
But you know they are damn right to so what they do because WE the sxmartiners let it happen! So now don't cry over spilled milk! It's too late! We SXM poeple are not united any longer so all we have to do now is SHUT UP!

Haitians had communication with the UTFAC but they demanded to be alone as I overheard a conversation. By the way UTFAC had their permit from Lt Governor for the march.

This Haitians didn’t had any, as you can see the privileges outsider get ( police escort) above the locals law for one law for all Lt Governor.

One of these days, we the st. martin people will remember, what the nation builders have been saying for years and for which they had their radio-program on 98.1 been removed by these same people, who had put pressure on the politicians and on pearl.
in the meantime, they have their own radio-programs tv-programs, transportation, churches, business and control the social security on the French side.
All over the world, it is becoming clear that haitians are a curse.
that is the reason their country is in that state of affairs, like in hell.
but our government not only alone let them to come in illegally, but give them all kinds of rights others do not have.
God place this country against haitian voodoo an witchcraft.

To concern, if you read my coment carefully you will understand exactly what i mean, that the haitiens don't want to mixte with the st Martiners that they do have a little haiti in our island and my comments were going out to those people i f you did read and recall the big talks they try to make about the headline in the news paper because it was written a "haitien girl found dead", some people feel it shouldn't have been written so because she was born here. I say and repeat a lot of people born here in this st Martin but they conisder they are st martiners only when it is convenient for them, and i say tomorrow if there should be a war between nations example st martin verse haitiens even the haitiens born here will go on haiti side they will never remember they were born st martin. I am not crying over spiled milk because i surely can handle myself and we st martiners have a big problem we do not want to see our own climb the ladder befor ripping them down, so all the nations take over not only hatiens.
I for sure won't let no one walk over me no matter who they are if you want to shut up thats your choice. We do not need to create any war ar more war between us, i just wanted you to get my point when i give my comment. Thank you.

I’m from a real bad neighborhood (witch one is not important), I live in and around the causes of crime everyday.
The only person that evening that spoke the truth was Pastor Smith; as a matter of fact he should have attacked some other institutions that contribute to what causes crime to happen.
Let me tell you something about my neighborhood , they are kids that go hungry everyday, there is sewage water running all day and everyday, kids are not going to school and I can go on and on about it.
What pastor Smith should have also mentioned, is that the same Chinese and Indians who are combined the biggest employers on the island , don’t pay their workers correctly according to the LAW and by doing this creating a substandard cla*s of people on this island, witch in turn is creating the very real and sad situation in my neighborhood.
You must be asking yourself or me what that has to do with crime, Good question!
I will tell you or rather I will give you an example; if you beat a dog everyday for along time or long enough, one day that dog will surprise you and grab on to that stick and attack you, because he had enough.
One must look very closely and analyze these so call actions done by so called action groups, I will explain.
Look at the UTFAC, who is really behind this organization and don’t get me wrong here, what they are doing is good, but my question is, for whom. This organization was born right after the tragic death of Eric in Dutch Quarter and the out cries that followed were all pertaining to crimes that were committed on two very prominent groups on the Island.
it was said many times before and I will say it again, when one of our own is gunned down nobody raises a eyebrow, but let it be for a one of those business people that underpay and ill-treat their workers and cause their kids to grow up in less favorable conditions, all hell brakes loose and we now have a crime wave, again don't get me wrong, a life is a life and it does not matter what color or ethnic group.
Pastor Smith said it best, it doesn’t take money to solve crime or at least more money that is being spent on the salaries of the men and women in blue, what I’m getting at, god for bid your house should be broken into or your car stolen and you happen to live in the neighborhood that I live in or one just like it and you call the police and you call the police and you call the police, I think by now you get the point.
And to send my point home, some of you wondered or even was disgusted about the fact that the Haitians had their own march on that same night, the answer is very simple; the UTFAC and other groups like it does the same thing all the time and that is exclude, neglect or fail to realize that one has to involve ALL sectors of the community in order to get a real response.
Let me explain, the Haitians, Hispanics and other ethnic groups that live on SxM have a*sociations and some even have radio and TV programs, were they contacted were they involved, what about the churches and religious organizations, what about the institutions that deal with the victims of crime (both the one who did it and the one who it was done to), and you would/will say that they were all notified via the media, notifying and asking someone to get involved/contribute are two totally different things.
And talking about the media, this event was not even broadcasted via radio (and trusts me the radio stations would have done it for free) and again I’m quite sure the UTFAC didn’t consider that idea, seeing that crime is “everybody’s” business or maybe not?
And to end my “preaching to the choir “as a good friend always tells me, “A HUNGRY MAN IS AN ANGRY MAN” being hungry is not always the want for food and according to the good BOOK, “MAN CAN NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE”, so one has to become ones brother’s keeper in order for ones brother not to go HUNGRY.

it appears that no matter what good SXM people do, there will always be those like you that have some negative response to the good people do.
SXM will never rise with people like you my dear.
You question the people in UTFAC...invitations went out to ALL groups my dear. UTFAC paid for a permit for the march out of their own personal monies..have you thought about that?
The people in UTFAC are locals all from the community councils..there is a rep from the Chinese and Indian community yes..but guess what?? they have a Dutch pa*sport and are now part of the Dutch Kingdom.
UTFAC contacted the Haitian church group and asked them to join the march, they declined saying they want to have their own thing.
So you my dear are a*suming that the UTFAC people have some sort of agenda or looking for mileage..far from it..infact the UTFAC could just as well sit just like u and comment all day behind computers doing jack Sh*t.-but instead they take their free time and do something!
You write things you have no idea...Philipsburg Broadcasting had PSA running for a few days broadcasting the event, members of UTFAC went on several radio shows to promote the event.
The Haitian group did not receive a permit for their march and they caused a traffic jam for almost 2 hours inconveniencing motorists who had no idea what was going on.
You say a hungry man is a angry man? so..what are U going to do about it???? get up and do something for a change..go feed the bread to the poor, go into the neighborhoods and feed the ones you say are hungry.
UTFAC mission was to bring the community together in a show of solidarity-they achieved exactly that. I thank them for getting such a large crowd to attend and join hands.
As for your mention that UTFAC was formed because of Eric's murder...yes it was..Was Eric not married to a SXMner? There is a lost in her and her families lives...dont forget a shopper that was shot in her foot during the same robbery...is that person not part of the community?
So real deal...i look forward to you feeding the hungry man..instead of criticizing the good others do.

In response to “response to the real deal”,
Obviously I have mashed your corn, and I think that’s a good thing although it was not my intention.
But by doing so I have proven a couple of things which also was not my intention to do!
The following are those points;
1.Apparently you failed to realize that I said that I’m from one off those under privilege neighborhoods/districts and that you are obviously one of those people that drive by real fast through my neighborhood, because you think something is going to happen to you.
2.You talking a bout feeding the poor, you still don’t get it. I said or rather quoted Jesus via a Bible verse; that man can NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE”. Although in the Bible it’s mostly referring to spiritual food, but it can also mean an education.
3.If you are so sure of your self and you speak of inclusion of ALL the community councils involved in UTFAC and also at the march. I would like you to specifically mention the ones that was there that evening. I know because I was there myself. One thing I can tell you, they were not on stage.
4.You boast about the UTFAC obtaining a permit for the march and paying with their personal money, guess what they have to, because the UTFAC is not a foundation/organization, it’s just an a*sociation. A group of people coming together and doing “something” and its members are obligated or governed by any bylaws, because UTFAC doesn’t have any.
5.Yes all or most of the radio stations played excerpts from that evening during their NEWS broadcasts. If you didn’t know it’s the normal thing to do when an event like that happens over the weekend and is reported on.
6.You talked about the Chinese and the Indians backers of this movement all have Dutch pa*sports or papers at least, what does that have to do with anything thing, please explain. If your trying to say that by having a Dutch pa*sport/Dutch papers its ok to under pay and abuse your workers and by doing this creating a substandard population here on the island, whereby their kids have to go through life being hungry, poor and uneducated. Then I have but one thing to do and that is to burn my pa*sport and renounce my Dutch rights as a St. Maartener( Oh I may have forgotten to mention that I am a St. Maartener and my blood line runs through St. Maarten’s history, just if you were wondering) because I don’t want to be a part of any abuse to natives or other ethnic groups that call St. Maarten home.

So my friend in closing and also making my final point, if you are a supporter or a*sociated with the UTFAC and the rest of the “aanhangers” feel the same like you do, towards my statement and also backs yours, then I have made my POINT.
