cocktail06062010Guana Bay:--- The St. Maarten Pride Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary at a cocktail party on Saturday. Pride President Jadira Veen distributed four awards to different groups namely, St. Maarten Science Fair Foundation, Pearl FM Radio, Belvedere Home Owners and Tenants Association, St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA). Veen in her address said the awards are just a symbol of appreciation to the persons who worked or either assisted the foundation in maintaining the environment.
awardspride06062010Also present was commissioner of tourism and economic affairs Frans Richardson who reminded the persons engaged in environment awareness that he did not forget his pledge some years ago prior to him becoming a commissioner. Richardson had said that he believes that the harbor should collect at least 0.50 cents from each passenger and it should be donated to the foundations that are looking out for the environment. He said while it is difficult task for Veen and Ruben Thompson to speak out and people are not listening it is necessary that they continue to do what they are doing right now.
pridenicole06062010Attending the function was the French side environment ambassador Nicole Piper who pledged to work closer with their Dutch counter parts simply because St. Maarten is one island. Piper said that whatever affects one side of the island would definitely affect the other side.
She said right now the French side is focusing on sorting garbage beginning from home. On Saturday Pride Foundation also cleaned up the cemetery French Quarter to mark their 10th anniversary.

Stop paying politics with the environment of this country. You don't understand the environment nor this country's economy so you CANNOT fix it as you listen to no one. Now it's election time and you suddenly remember your promises of a couple of years ago. Get real brother Frans. People HATE liers, especially in this day and age of technology you cannot lie and get away with it. You have never cared for the environment or the economy. All you care about are your AA miles you rack up and your daily allowance you get.

Chickens don't go into a wolf cage. Frans presence at the Pride's cocktail party shows he's willing to venture where no other politician in St.Maarten history has ever ventured before. In addition, he has put his feet to the fire by not only providing support, but to bring up a suggestion he made during his time in the opposition benches. Now that he sits in a position of power, although not holding the portfolio of envrironmental issues, he can motivate his suggestion to his fellow EXCO members.
I would imagine that in order to institute a 0.50cts tax on cruise pa*sengers, there would have to be some type of support from the Commissioners in charge of the harbor and the port authority, Mr Theo H. And Mr Theo track record is not anywhere close to environmental friendley choices.

Who is in charge of SLAC? Maybe the commissioner could levy a 0.20cts tax and the other 0.30 comes from the harbor. The lagoon needs urgent attention and the continued efforts to bring awareness to our only environment by landlubbers needs it too. This is a suggestion, maybe the commisioner can motivate both.
In government you have to give support to get support for your project. Words are cheap if nothing happens.

Frans makes me think back on Loulou. Loui was gonna clean up the situation with the lagoon. He got elected and then started dumping his gump in the very lagoon he was gonna clean up.

Yes indeed, those sweet memories.
