Church and State need to be kept separate---SHTA.

Philipsburg:----The SHTA believes that the Executive Council has set a dangerous premise by stating that the State and Church are not separate. Furthermore, Government has opened the door for every denomination (Catholic, Hindu, Jewish etc) to seek similar funding for their establishments. The SHTA tried contacting Commissioner Frans Richardson and Lt. Governor Richards to get some insight into this decision, but they were both unavailable.

Secondly, the reasoning behind this action is questionable. Based on publications in the media, Government followed proper procedure by putting a stop to the construction of the church, where no permit had been issued. Therefore, the need for compensation remains questionable. Under normal terms, this would have had to be dealt with by the courts.

Lastly, the SHTA is concerned about the lack of fiscal responsibility. Recent meetings with the CFT and the Executive Council revealed that Government needs to increase its revenue stream in order to balance its budget and thus all Capital expenditure needs to be prioritized.

The SHTA understands that this decision has not been approved by the Department of Finance and plans to follow all available avenues to have this decision questioned.

I think that SHTA should also question when Marietje cut a check for her husband's foundation since they are so concerned about building churches this money maybe better spent in this way. They should also encourage Government to build more sporting facilities for the young poeple instead of putting camaras in frontstreet.

What I do not understand is we have a problem in education and labour but yet the government can find money to give the Methodist Church. We don't have a budget for 2010 but yet the government gave money to the Methodist Church. All other churches does raise funds to build or remodel their churches but the government helped the Methodist Church....hmmm something is fishy

While I am a Methodist by christening I totally disagree with what the Government has done and especially the statements made by these two commissioners. Do they and their leader realize the "dangerous" implication of their statements?

Historical concerns:
Have any of these good gentlemen attended even primary school and followed History classes? Did they as adults and politicians even take the time to educate themselves as to the meaning of the term "separation of Church and State"?

Financial concerns:
Teachers are not receiving their back pay, the "NEW" government building is standing unfinished, our cultural foundation is in problems, G.E.B.E. is killing people with ridiculously high rates, etc. etc. But yet our dear leaders, takes it upon themselves, without consulting anyone outside their club (EXCO and Methodist church) to take HALF A MILLLION out of the Tourism budget to fund a certain religious group.

Governing concerns:
They cannot even prepare the 2010 budget but are dishing out GOVERNMENT'S (the people') money left right and center. Patting themselves on the back. Now I understand the true (SXM) meaning of "Transparency in Government". It simply means: "We, the government, do what we want and you the people just have to shut up and accept it".

I guess we will now hear some statement of some negative issue that was committed by the previous Government. That is the trend now to try and cover up and justify their wrongdoings over the past months since in Government.

@ xyz. That money that Maria gave to her husband's foundation also went to a worthy cause, YOUR people, and was accounted for to the last cent. Yet she was chastised for it. It is clear that you are one of those fools who will let your "favorite" political party sink you right down into the sewer rather than to admit that they are wrong and no better than those you accused of "bad governance".

This and previous situations makes me ask myself .... Was the previous Government all that bad??????

It is quite obvious that these NA Commissioners are lunatics. They continue to show that they are uneducated and now have convinced me that they also lack common sense. First this fool called 'brother' created a new disease called the HINI, now these fools turn into religious fanatics. Where the hell are we going? And their leader has the audacity to stand up beside then with this nonsense. Then we have the preacher talking crap about casinos and brothels being built asif government has built them. Only a fool cannot see beyond this nonsense.
My question to them is, since you fools can find 500.000 guilders to build a church, then you guys better find the money to pay the civil servants and teachers their cost of living increase as well as the yearly adjustments.
Believe me when I say, I too will build a church on a plot of government land, without a permit. And trust me, if my church is demolished or if I am in any way hindered, I will drag these lunatics to courts as a precedent has been set. Equality for all!

You're truly a lunatic just like those NA lunatics. To try and justify the Naf 500.000,- guilders building of an ILLIGAL church to a Naf 25.000,- guilder check that went to the calypsonians is pure ludacracy. NA made a HUGE BLUNDER and it will cost them dearly. The government isn't interested in building sport accomodations but what they will build to suit their sponsor Mr Insurance is a cricket field.
