Marigot: --- The gendarmes are busy investigating the death of Henri Almando Avalam (25) of St. Martin whose body was found in a home in Concordia early Thursday morning.
According to Prosecutor Jacques Louvier, Henri was killed while looking through a window at some bandits who were busy breaking into his car to steal materials.
Louvier said the young man was working as an electrician and he had lots of materials including a DVD player in his vehicle at the time.
Louvier said Henri was at his girlfriend's house at the time of the incident. He said it appeared as if Henri heard when someone was breaking his vehicle and he decided to look through a window to see what was happening but the bandits responded by firing one shot at the victim, which killed him on the spot. Louvier made clear that the victim was a working man and that he was not known by the Gendarmerie.

The French prosecutor said the gendarmes are busy investigating the case.
In the meantime, a press release from the Gendarmerie states that the SMUR and the fire brigade responded to the scene around 3:30 am but was unable to revive the victim. The gendarmes also confirmed that a number of their agents are now working on the case. Notably this is the second murder recorded on the French side of the island for the year 2010.

For all the "gendarmes" we see on the french side you would think bandits like the ones responsible for this would be off the streets...
I only see the gendarme stopping the cars of hard working people who are just trying to get home after a hard days work...
The fact that any little idiot can get his hands on a gun is proof that they are not doing there jobs.

My condolences goes out to the bereaved family. ..

It is without a doubt that young fools are responsible for this tragedy and we can all see where it comes from, as it is clear from the behaviour we see of those school children(in schools and on the streets).

However, St. Maarteners try to put the blame on someone inorder to over look their own and try to maintain a good public/ international image, which is not doing any good. This ignorance is then thrown on innocent foreigners who are working diligently and contributing to the success of this wonderful island. They (foreigners) are the ones who are getting the bad name for most of the crimes in SXM.

So I am urging everyone on this island to look at the facts as they are and concentrate on what is more important. We should all work together in curbing these crimes and influencing these young people in the right direction.

The Police should reduce their concentration of immigration controls and focus more on patrols on the areas that harbor these culprits. We all know the so called "bad areas".

These huge investments in bringing forces from other islands and housing them in luxury hotels/ resorts and renting numerous cars for them to carry out immigration controls and then party afterwards is just waste of tax payers money.

I am a young guy, just twenty years of age, living here on the island and it irritates me to see all the nonsense that is happening here.

Let us indeed pray for our improvement and movement towards a safe and prosperous future for it is no longer secure here and we are loosing our name as the friendly island.

@ Youth Vision,

I agree with what you say, that you can see how youngsters are nowadays and senseless crimes like this are a result of that.
However, nobody on this blog started bashing and blaming foreigners at all! They just said it's a shame how SXM is turning out.

Unfortunately sxm's population is growing way to fast and we have what I always think of as 'city' crime, we are no longer a small community and that's just something we have to deal with. With that comes along the need for more police vigilence and we don't have near enough police, so yes bringing reinforcements is a must even if we don't like them. They shouldn't be hosted in 'luxury hotels' as you put it (not like I know it happens for a fact or how much money is spent), but their presence is unfortunately needed.

Whether you want to root for the underdog or not, immigration controls are a must- especially with the island already being overpopulated...Uncontrolled immigration will lead to a worse situation for both legal and illegal residents. These are just issues every developed area needs to deal with. And if we keep becoming more like a city (and we're not slowing down with the development) it will only get worse... I'm not saying that to dissagree with you, but my arguement just leads up to it.

I usually hate blogs but people need to discuss these issues so that we can make good desicions for our island instead of just blaming whoever happens to be in power... So good that you put your opinions up. And in any case, people need to stop thinking that everyone else is gonna raise their kids.

Dee,

I am sorry, I had a feeling people would see it this way, but it was not my intention to evoke the bashing and blaming attitude. I was only speaking in general, of the general concentration of the general population.

Also, I meticulously said that "the police should 'reduce' their concentration on immigration" since that seems to be the main focus and they should focus more on reducing crime as a whole. Obviously immigration controls are important, of which I not against, because without that an influx of foreigners would be created thereby over-populating the island. However, there are ways of doing this so that a negative image is not fashioned.

With regards to the reinforcement needed by the police, they should create a more attractive package to encourage locals to join the force. This is profoundly required since we are heading towards country status and we don't want to give the impression that we cannot handle our domestic affairs. On the other hand, if foreign support is needed in these situations then so it will have to be, but this will just prove us as being dependent.

As for the colossal, never-ending construction that is going on here in SXM, it is only stealing the natural beauty that was once enjoyed. However, this has created numerous jobs and will continue to create jobs for all the inhabitants. Also, it is boosting our impression/ attraction in the tourism market by catering for every possible needs of travelers.

We have to consider the pros and the cons. Moreover, these infrastuctural developments has its benefits which we cannot deny.

We all have to be open-minded and look "around" and "inside" the box, instead of just the surface facing us.
