mariabuncamper25012010Philipsburg - While we have shifted into first gear on the "paved" road to country status, the dust has not settled on the back roads, where day to day challenges remain a balancing act for local government officials. Officials who should give sufficient attention and public accountability on various tasks that affect our (business) community directly. This is no different for St. Maarten's Local Chief of Police, Lt. Governor Franklin Richards, who recently received a request for more clarification on the recent rise of criminal activities, from Island Council Member Maria Buncamper-Molanus.

In a letter to the Chief of Police, Buncamper-Molanus asked for statistical information to clarify whether an increase in crime has indeed occurred, in particular the ones of a more violent nature that have resulted in the deaths of local business men, in comparison to previous years. While she acknowledged that the responsibility of Justice falls under the Central Government, she also questions if we including the Office of the Local Chief of Police should be viewing things differently considering that the challenges we face with crime seem to be escalating.

Various efforts to combat crime were highlighted in Buncamper-Molanus' communication to the Chief. Including: The Central Government's proposed reorganization and coaching of the Windward Islands Police Management Team, an ongoing campaign to recruit new police officers, an established cooperation between the police forces of the Windward Islands and Rotterdam and various project proposals submitted by St. Maarten, to ultimately improve the police force as a whole and provide the St. Maarten citizens and visitors alike, with a sense of higher security and peace of mind. Mrs. Buncamper-Molanus requested more clarification on what exactly the agreement is between Rotterdam and St. Maarten and more facts and figures on the current recruitment status. Basically, she is requesting an update on the aforementioned initiatives and an explanation on the results of all these efforts, negative or positive.

After a list of eight queries, Buncamper-Molanus stated: "More police presence and proper equipment appear to be the recurring calls from those involved. If this is indeed the main issue, why are these issues not given priority? Yes indeed the Central Government is responsible for Justice. We have had Justice Ministers come and go and we have the same problems recur. The constant factors in this equation are the people of St. Maarten, crime and the responsibility of the Local Chief of police on the island. So should we be doing things differently leading up the constitutional reform? Should there be more involvement from the Island Government and the Local Chief of Police?"

The Island Council Member concluded by stating that fighting crime is everybody's business and requested a prompt response from the office of the Local Chief of Police as this issue is a critical concern and would benefit the people of and the visitors to St. Maarten.

Thank you for your care in raising a concern for crime. Its still sad to see how you are under fire from the NA and others just because of a mistake but regardless, you are still fighting to have the persons in charge inform the public on question we need answers too. Thank you Maria!

The rock she came under from is named St. Maarten. It's with these type of idiotic remarks of people like you that make everything political. Elections over and people still getting killed. The question you should ask yourself is were your head is stuck as you seem not to understand the severity of crime on this island. We continue like this and we'll have nothing as all we'll have is rampant murders like certain other countries in this world. To Maria I say keep asking those in authority questions and make them do their job. They are in office and are responsible to handle this problem named CRIME. I hope everyone can see the severity of this problem and deal with it. Remember there will be NO 10-10-10 if JUSTICE isn't in place.

What a shame when you play politics with a sensitive issue as crime. What you was on holiday again marietje ?

Mmm to bad you was not here 2 weeks ago when the chief of police Duran along with the prosecuter give a precentation to the st maarten community in Bel Air .

From 2005 until 2009 maybe next time if you have a chance ask any one in the community and the will tell ,duran do not need to come by you to tell you.

My god if that the best you want from a presentation from the police and the prosecutor then I understand your ignorance to the topic. Nor Mr. Doran nor the prosecutor could tell if CRIME was DOWN or PEOPLE WEREN'T REPORTING IT because they don't believe in the system anymore. So what presentation you talking about. Did you know that murders are up by 75%, manslauter up by 31% and rape up by 8%. I wouldn't have known it as these figures weren't printed in NO PAPER since the presentation in Belair so please stop talking it's politics.

Say what you'll want but since Maria put out the justice article asking the governor for clarifications, we have statistics printed in the paper about crime, justice minister and former minister coming to talk about police force etc and last but not least the bloggers waking up and realizing that if we continue this way we dead either before or by 10-10-10.
Now Maria I read in the letter posed many questions to the governor, 7 to be precise (one has a & b) of which only the statistics have been printed in the papers sofar. Reading the blog above it made me think that we have a problem as we don't know how much crime really happening. The prosecutor tight lip on 5 MURDERS and just continue going on. Many persons may feel that Maria profilling herself for elctions or playing politics with this and that there god given right. Also MY godgiven right is for MARIA to ask questions on my and other peoples behalf who don't have the information some of these bloggers seem to have. We have had 3 murders in the last couple of weeks alone and the trend is only going to get worst if we don't hold those responsible accountable that something is being done. The governor is one of those and he should be questioned everytime we have the opportunity until we start getting results. To the politicians I say " elections over and I hope William Marlin negociates for minister of justice so we can fix SXM justice for country SXM. Remember justice and finance are MUST. We have CFT (financial higher supervision) already so now we need JUSTICE.
