St. Maarten Pride Foundation and EPIC welcome Government’s recently announced alteration to the Ring road project. The alteration to the original plan as announced by Commissioner Heyliger is based on recommendations by the Foundations.

The change includes the designation of the Soualiga road, which runs through Pond Island, as the proposed Ring road’s eastern border as an alternative to the previously planned filling-in and destruction of the Great Salt Pans monument.

The aforementioned change is an extremely significant milestone and victory, not just for the Foundations but for current and future generations of St. Maarteners everywhere. The Foundations congratulate Government on taking this important decision and call for the urgent implementation of a Zoning Plan for the Great Salt Pond to prevent future illegal filling and ensure the protection of the Great Salt Pans monument and internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA).

In principle St. Maarten Pride Foundation and EPIC continue to be against the entire Ring road project based on a number of previously publicized concerns.

The Foundations are, for instance, still very much concerned about the consequences the Ring road project will have on the water retention capacity of the Great Salt Pond. Pride and EPIC are not convinced by Mr. Kurt Ruan’s, of the New Works and Projects Department, recently published statement “that the holding capacity of the Great Salt Pond will remain at its optimal level”.

The study Government often refers to when mentioning the required water storage capacity of the Great Salt Pond (109 ha (hectare)) was carried out in 1996 (Grabowsky & Poort study) and is therefore outdated and not based on the current rate of construction or the state of St. Maarten’s infrastructure.

The removal of vegetation on the Great Salt Pond’s surrounding hillsides and in valleys for the building of homes, businesses etc. or the construction of roads continues to reduce the water retention capacity of these areas and therefore channels increasingly large volumes of water to the Fresh Pond and the Great Salt Pond. The influx of rainwater into the Fresh Pond and the Great Salt Pond over the past few years has consequently increased at a rapid rate. Recent flooding has highlighted the fact that the abovementioned activities combined with large scale land reclamation has significantly reduced the Pond’s water retention capacity. The building of the Ring road, is therefore likely to lead to serious flooding of the Sucker Garden, Illidge Road, Zagers Gut and Greater Philipsburg Area.

Considering the aforementioned St. Maarten Pride Foundation and EPIC believe Government should be planning for increased water storage capacity rather than further reducing the Great Salt Pond’s present water storage capacity.

WOWWW!! This is such a victory for THEO! This has got to be the FIRST time or at least the most significant time, that these envio groups have agreed to anything. They can say it was their ideas bla bla bla, but I'm sure they NEVER expected THEo to actually do it lol! Talk about baiting. Now they are on record supporting it. Beautiful.

Wow, you cannot read or you have selective reading skills.
No need for anyone to go into a tirade with you as you are too much into the political promotion of Master Theo.
The Easter Side of the pond was slated for development of the ring road. Please go and ask Kurt Ruan the truth.
The environmental groups have been lobbying government to save the eastern side, Theo is now saying this is going to be the case. It is a victory for the environmental groups. With the public release today it is meant for Master Theo to uphold this decision and that the groups will hold him accountable if he decides to make changes down the line. This also goes for any families that are frantically trying hard to prove that the eastern side of the pond belongs to them. The Eastern side of the pond has to be designated a protected zone area-lets see if Master Theo will do the honorable thing now.
The environmental groups have been campaigning hard behind the scenes to keep the eastern side away from development.... while you were sleeping and kissing Theo @ss.
btw, have you read where the environmental groups are saying that the 109 hct, is outdated for the ponds water capacity? are you not worried that your fellow residents will experience heavy and severe flooding?
Please take some reading and comprehension classes, it would do you good

Your right that WOW cannot read. the WHOLE eastern part was slated to be build and even Public works objected as there waterpumps and basin would have been enclosed. All the salt pans would have been destroyed had Jay Haversir with the help of Buncamper and Delano not put them in the batch of protected monuments so they couldn't be touched without approval of the monument council and the island council. Also the drainage of the surrounding lands would become a serious problem and the overflow of the Rolandus canal in event of emergeny would not be able to overflow anymore into the pond. That the overflow part by mingo gasstation. The ringroad will not be completed for many years as the monies aren't there. Naf 18 million is far from the real figure but then again ask Kurt and he'll explain why it is. Just like the round-a-bouts they'll add on millions for meerwerk (unforseen extrawork) and like that screw up the price tag once again. Not ONE project up until present has been done without a mayor cost overrun. The consultant here is Lievense and you already know in whose pocket they are. They also advise on the harbor and many other projects with cost overruns. The Pride and EPIC must be damm proud to be able to stop such a project dead in it's track and NO their not on record supporting the project but theire on record for forcing the protection of OUR monuments. So when you want to be cynical please do that on your own time and don't waste the blogs for that. Like I said you must be a comedian and Fernando Clark is having a show and needs some helpers.

Theo ain't stupic, His party is green, so he has to start being a little more green. The protection of the a COUPLE of the salt pans were protected. Our governments in the past has never uttered the work protection of anything. We were all for the free enterprise market. And now we have to fight and fight for something to be left for my and your kids to see. Ask your kids if they know about Mulletbay,, about the caves underneath of Maho hotel the roach coach they build on a historic site. All the wells they allowed to be filled in, the Fort we sold, the graves we don't repsect,
the old salt factory, we nearly gave permission to sell the Catholic church on Front street. the access to the beaches. we just moved the monument in cupecoy.

Think about it, I wish we have more mindful of our enviroment and our heritage years ago, maybe we could have saved more for the next generation to be part of
