frans23092009PHILIPSBURG:--- Commissioner of Tourism, Economic and Aviation Affairs Frans Richardson at a press conference on Wednesday said that elected officials as well as the tourism bureau has to market the island aggressively so that the island does not lose out on anything during the global economic crisis.

Richardson condemned the statements made by former tourism commissioner Roy Marlin who said that the commissioner was wasting taxpayer’s money when he went to China last week. Richardson also called on Marlin to share any information he may have for St. Maarten to gain its revenues. He said the island only knows tourism and maybe the former tourism commissioner may have another idea on how the island can make money. He said several other islands and countries that were strong in other areas such as agriculture has almost abandoned that source of income and has turned to tourism.

Richardson made clear that he would continue to do all in his power to market the island more aggressively and to make sure that St. Maarten does not lose its visitors to any other destination who is also marketing their island.

Richardson said while in China he managed to gather crucial information, which is vital for St. Maarten especially regarding several airlines. Richardson explained that right now Jet Blue is planning to add another flight to St. Maarten on weekends if the island can work out a better landing schedule. He further explained that he would be seeking to get Lufthansa back to St. Maarten while some focus will be placed on the European Market, German and British markets.

Richardson further explained that St. Maarten has already lost over 20% of its arrivals and businesses on the island are doing badly. He said there is much work to be done to make sure St. Maarten stays on its feet.

Richardson said a number of carriers including Air Transat, Virgin Atlantic, Southwest, Jet Blue is interested in the Caribbean.

Finally we have people in place to work and help bring back our island ST MAARTEN to what it once was. Now I feel like things are getting done for the people of this island. Roy Marlin was in office for almost 3 terms and what has he done?? Can anyone please pen-point what he has done for this island apart from helping Westin and Blue mall establish themselves here because he was well taking care of in advance; whether it may be flying around the world in their private jet or wheeling and dealing under the table.
He was always on a plane going somewhere and his trips were never justified nor clarified to this day. So I was pretty surprise to see that he had the guts to go to the newspaper and question Commissioner Frans Richardson for his conference trips. At lease the people of SXM knew why, when, how long and where he was going. Mr Roy Marlin was also over public works and didn't do 1 thing for the infrastructure on SXM, he sat in office for 4 years but was too busy trying to make deals to make himself financially stable. He even used our tax funds to pull pipes for his future gas station in belvedere while they were busy with the roundabout. But Some of us are too crooked, blind or just pretend not to see what he has been doing because they are given a few dollars now and then. I am a straight person and I give Jack his Jacket when it fits. I would like to commend Mr Frans Richardson for a job well done so far and I hope he will continue. Another thing, Commisionner Maria Buncamper never did anything for sports, she sat in office for 4 years and all she did was try to make petty statements to get in the newspaper everyday. I think she likes pictures. Since in office the new commissioner of sport has been focusing on our sport facilities and has been trying to get the kingdom games to our island in 2011.
I mean it has barely been 3 months and he has done so much so far. He reminds me of Obama in a way. The media and the republican supporters will never be on his side even if his visons and plans will benefit its people and better the economic situation, because some people tend to be too political and don't see the big picture. To me when Election day is over, it is OVER, we as a people need to move on and stop criticizing because of party differences. Today I feel that SXM is the same as the USA, DP supporters will never accept NA as the governing party and I think that it is time for them to grow up for the future of this island and its people. Next thing, the people who wrote the previous comments, I think you should try to make constructive criticism instead of discussing the way the commissioner looks. He is in government to work for the people of this island, he is not in a pageant trying to win 1st prize for Mr GQ.

We are quick to tear down people and find every imaginable issue to peck on. We should be supporting someone who has an interest in changing the status quo. We leave other people come to St.Maarten and we quick to praise them without knowing who they are and where they came from. I have seen it over the years. People come here here with nice talks and pretend they are ambitious until we find out more.
Frans in the last couple months has been getting familiar with everything, while doing so, he has shown that he is willing to make things happen. Government is about continuiety. What was put in motion before June of this year has to continue. If Frans decide to pick up the ball and run with it, then it could only benefit all of us whether we are DP, NA, PPA, you name it.
Let's keep looking at the bigger picture and stop wasting time on petty stuff
